Joan of Arc, also known as “The Maid of Orleans” was born in 1412 to Jacques d'Arc and Isabelle Romée, who were a peasant family, they lived in Domrémy in north-east France. Domrémy is a village which was then in the French part of the duchy of Bar. Joan's parents owned about 50 acres of land and when her father wasn't farming, he worked with a minor position as a village official. At the time of Joan’s birth, France was involved in a long-running war with England, commonly known as the Hundred Years’ War; it began over who would inherit the French throne.
