Joan Of Arc: The Rise Of Peasant Rebellions

France and England fought against each other in the Hundred Years’ War (1337-1453). In the end, France beat England and won the Hundred Years’ War, as the tide of battle turned in favor of the French by the forces of Joan of Arc. Several reasons on why France may have beaten England were Joan of Arc, who the French attributed their succession of victories to after she repulsed the English from Orléans in 1429, and the unified relationship between France and Burgundy that drove England to an ultimate downfall in 1453, as France “continued progressively to force the English back, ending up with England only having ownership of Calais.” 2. The success of Joan of Arc was centered on her victorious wins against the English, leading French to victory at Orleans in 1429 and continuing with a succession of victories. What made Joan of Arc influential was that she was only a peasant from Domremy when she introduced herself to King Charles VII, telling him it was her duty to deliver the besieged Orleans from the English. While Charles and many others were skeptical, Joan of Arc proved to be an inspirational military genius with a sense of national identity, taking back Orleans and defeating the English in other triumphs.

Peasant rebellions of the late 14th Century were triggered by selfish landowners’ plans to close off new economic opportunities for the peasantry through a “repressive legislation that forced peasants to stay in their farms,” freezing their wages at low levels. With France increasing the taille (a direct tax on the peasantry), the English Parliament passed a Statute of Laborers, “limiting wages to pre plague levels and restricting the ability of peasants to leave the land of their original masters”; opposition among the peasantry towards this legislation and set of strict rules was a prominent factor in several peasant rebellions, such as the English peasants’ revolt in
