During the battle, Joan was captured and later sold to the English by the Burgundians. Once in the English’s hands, they accused Joan of being a religious heretic. The trial, unfairly, found her guilty of this charge and had her burned at the stake. While on the stake Joan forgave her persecutors and even asked them to pray for her. Joan died on May 29, 1431 and four hundred and eighty-nine years later on May 16, 1920, Joan was declared a saint by Pope Benedict
