Joan Ganz Cooney was born on November 30, 1929, in Phoenix, Arizona. Joan Ganz Cooney created the first TV programming as a documentary producer for public television in 1962. Joan was classified in upper middle class category growing up. The opportunities Joan Ganz Cooney had growing up words cannot fathom. In the mid-1950s, she had the opportunity to move to New York City and she took it. Joan worked as a publicist in New York City for a couple years. She was able to create television programming as a documentary producer for public television in the early 1960’s. Cooney won an Emmy Award for a show called Poverty, Anti-Poverty, and the Poor.
