Joan D Arc As A Messenger

Decent Essays
In the graphic novel Messenger The Legend of Joan of Arc it tells the story of the infamous Joan D’Arc. Through the whole graphic novel everything from the people to the background is very realistic and detailed with very dramatic shadows to help show the gritty and dark aspects of this comic. It is because of this and the clean lines with foreboding colors that the illustrator does that the reader can see such tense emotions of the people in the comic. In the page that I have chosen you see an injured Joan being laid down in such a way that makes her look like a cross. The illustrator did this for a more religious feel in this book because she is a messenger from God. The dramatic shadows on this page help to show a sense of discord and death.

The work that I am analyzing is Bathsheba After the Bath by Jan Steen (1626-1679). I believe the meaning of the painting shows exactly what women had to endure to be presented to a man of high royalty and had no rights in the matter to reject his advances. The gloomy colors in the painting correlates with the emotion that Bathsheba expresses. Examining the painting I found interesting props surrounding Bathsheba and the maidservants. The painting tells the story of how King David sent for Bathsheba.…

The medium used (oil) allowed the painter to make very realistic shades and colors. The figures and landscape in the painting also looked very fluid and real due to the use of the oil paint. The painting contains the Virgin Mary, the baby Jesus and his second cousin St. John the Baptist. The painting foreshadows the death of Christ on the cross. This point is displayed in the action of the painting where St. John is handing Jesus a small cross and Mary is looking upon it knowing what is to…

The Virgin (Mary) held a cross in one hand, but also the heart of Jesus in the other. The bishop of Nantes found the painting to not be to the standards of celebrating the joyous triumph of their faith and therefore quickly regarded it. Many of Delacroix’s religious paintings were regarded as offensively individualistic or risque. Delacroix had an extremely hard time trying to make the painting to Nante’s wishes. There had been several changes and redone sketches before the finished piece.…

The Crucified Christ (1503-04) is a classical example of Italian Renaissance art. The piece illustrates, extremely effectively the Italian desire to make everything in which they paint beautiful, not matter how horrific the subject may be. Christ in this depiction, although, dead does not appear to have progressed into rigor mortis of any degree, Christ also appears to look peace in death in the Raphael painting, unlike in the Grunewald where distress is on Christ’s face is blatant. The way in which Christ is bleeding in Raphael’s piece is depicted with a degree of beauty, the bleeding is not messy, any blood coming from Christ, is delicately dripping into chalices held by angels on either side of Christ. This is a complete contrast with that of Grunewald’s depiction of the crucifixion, where blood is freely flowing down both his arms and legs.…
