There have been many contributions to the sonography field in past years. Many pioneers have come up with new ways to improve the sonography profession. Numerous improvements have been made ranging from new technologies, medical devices, organizations, and making the work environment of the sonographer a safer place. Joan Baker has played an important role in sonography, since she has created organizations, taught sonography ergonomics, and has an award given in her honor.
Story
Joan Baker was raised and got her education in England (About Us, 2016). She arrived to the United States 1965, because she got an invitation from Stanford Medical Center, to open the department of ultrasound (About Us, 2016). She concentrated her education in radiography and studied at the Liverpool University from 1956 – 1958. After graduating from radiography, she had the opportunity to work at the St Mary's Hospital located in Paddington, London. She performed invasive x-ray (Baker, 2016). In 1961, she was under the supervision of James Bull, MD. Her duties were to conduct echoencephalograms at the National Hospital for Nervous Disease situated in Queen Square, London (Baker, J., 2005).
