Parents informs the way one views others and the world. For example, in Amy Tan novel excerpt “Two kids” states that Jing-Mei’s mother wants her to be something she’s not. Jing Mei says “I’ll never be the kind of daughter you want me to be!” (24) Jing Mei stood up to her mother and told her that she would never be the kind of daughter she wants. It shows that Jing Mei’s mother wants her to act like she’s from China. Jing-Mei plays the piano even though she is not good at it because she doesn't want to disappoint her mother.
