Over the course of the graphic novel, Jin’s personality changes immensely. In the beginning, Jin is very timid and does not stand up for himself. This is a result of him being a new student of a different race. Though, at the end of the story, he becomes confident in himself as a result of him experiencing life as a popular white boy and seeing why being himself is a good thing.

The internal conflict Jin experiences are based on the conflicting identities he has. This is best seen when Jin refuses to speak in mandarin because he wants to be liked by the mean boys, but after realizing Wei Chen is nice to him, he talks to him in Mandarin. The idea that spawns this conflict is the notion that he must fit in even if it means to lose a part of
