Jimmy Liao: A Self Analysis

Improved Essays
Inspired by the children literature illustrator, Jimmy Liao, I hope to record my thoughts and materialize my idyllic sanctuary on canvases and papers.
I enjoy painting fantasy landscapes with acrylic. In painting acrylic, I found the rendering of the sky most mesmerizing. I like to juxtapose the realistic object at the focal point with an abstract surrounding, like the trees and mountains in Piece 2, 4, and 5. Besides fantasy landscapes, I also like to paint objects either realistically or abstractly as shown in piece 6 and 7; in those “observations”, my main concentration is to explore the appropriate color scheme to convey my feelings towards those objects. Thematically, my landscapes are surreal mixtures of nature and dreams.

I chose to write about Frank Lloyd Wright’s house, Falling Water. At my funeral, I want people to know that I chose this piece of art because it was how I wanted to live my life. Sturdy and firm but lost in a forest of life and nature. The architecture of the house represents the different changes in my life and how the light that shines through the house, tells a story about no matter which way I turned or how bad it was, there was always a way to see through it. The water that rushes underneath represents how I had tranquility with my life as well as almost disconnecting to the outside world.…

Kent’s use of vibrant color provides feelings of contrast, motion, and depth to Artist in Greenland. In this painting, the main colors are shades of white and blue, accented with lavenders and yellows along with some green, brown, and black tones. Due to the environment being painted, most of the colors are cool (the blues, lavenders, and green) or neutral (the white, brown, and black shades), with the exception of the yellow shades, which are warm. The sky, which gradients from a deep cornflower blue to a golden yellow, makes the start white tones of the icebergs and snow field stand out. On the snow field itself, variations in color show ripples and crests on the surface of the ground: shades of lilac provide shadows in low areas, while an off white tone washes the sunny areas.…

After browsing over all of the resumes within two minutes, there were two that stood out to me. The worst resume that I could find was Stella Bailey. Bailey's resume was a great format, however her content was not so great. She lacked being descriptive on her resume. Bailey would talk about tools that she used, but not how she utilized them.…

The general conception of visual realism that I believe best suits Vermeer’s The Concert and The Music Lesson and Bierstadt’s Yosemite Valley, would be the use of pictorial depth cues to portray visual realism. Both painters used pictorial depth cues to create a strong sense of visual realism that helped draw fascination into their paintings. Without the use of the pictorial depth cues, the paintings would not have appeared as if they were realistic and definitely would not have been questioned if they were creating an illusion. Personally, I believe that the pictorial cues that helped Vermeer the most with creating a sense of visual realism in both The Concert and The Music Lesson were linear perspective and size perspective.…

A first impression of Martin Johnson Heade’s tropical hummingbird landscapes might typically relate them to a “lush tangle of exotic nature” (p. 48). When the viewer more closely observes such landscapes, however, several unusual features become distinct, particularly, the startling disconnectedness of large scale subjects of flowers and hummingbirds against a distant landscape, and the contrast of sharp foreground figures surrounded by a gradual vignette of receding middle ground. Art historian Maggie M. Cao believes that studying and deciphering the startling inconsistencies of Heade’s hummingbird landscapes helps to reveal meaning in paintings that are otherwise only thought of in association with scientific studies or still-life paintings…

J.M.W Turner has a dreamy style to his art because he experiments with space, brushwork, color, and light to make his work look muted and hazy. Over the course of his career, Turner used hard brushstrokes and blended the colors in his skies. This makes the art look foggier and less defined. The composition of his landscapes usually involves one figure at the center of the painting (a boat, mountain, tree, etc.) and a figure that is smaller, darker, and seems closer to the viewer (birds, humans.) By adjusting the proportions, Turner is able to distort the viewer's perception of space.…

There was not a single piece of leather furniture that lacked an intricate map I had scratched into it with my grubby four-year-old fingernails. Every wall and flat surface had Sharpie murals of vast cotton candy skies and family trees made of dogs as soon as I discovered how to hold a pen. My parents never tried to stifle my creativity. They urged me to pursue artistry and offered every tool conceivable to develop my creative skills. Growing up hearing my father jam out on guitar and watching my mother lose herself painting silk (among the many other hobbies they both tend to), my inspiration never ran dry.…
