Jimmy Cross Analysis

Decent Essays
After the war Jimmy Cross came to visit me more often, usually once a month at my home in Massachusetts. Each time he came to visit me he would always bring up new things to tell me like how he is doing in his life at home, what he does now for his free time but mostly tells me his interaction with Martha. Every time he brings Martha into the conversation I can always tell in his eyes that he still has feelings for her, and those feelings he has can never disappear like the things we carried in the war. It was one of those days where we both decided to go out and just enjoy ourselves by going to a bar or going on a walk to a park. I can remember when we went into the bar we would have conversations about the weather, sports and our thoughts

While the reservation may not have the best education, Mr. Dodge uses Junior's race and home environment against him in order to reject the point he is trying to make. This is a common thing for people in powerful positions to do to overthrow others. Junior does not have access to the same level of education as most of his class and Mr. Dodge knows that, but instead of trying to help Junior succeed, Mr. Dodge uses this information to underestimate Junior. It is likely that Mr. Dodge is relying on his position of power to uphold himself, because he does not want a student he sees as irrelevant to the public to be able to prove him wrong. Therefore, Mr. Dodge is more interested in maintaining his pride and the already established stereotypes…

Brent Staples’ Just Walk On By shows a skilled use of diction and personal anecdotes to convey the author’s wholesome message to the audience and to connect with his audience on a more personal level. Staples’ use of diction in Just Walk On By begins promptly, and the author chooses to make his word choice quite intricate in order to allow the audience to better visualize hardships that he, as an African American man, had to endure. He begins the story with stating “my first victim was a woman” (Staples 542). His usage of the word “victim” clearly reflects some troubled values within society that not only existed when the story was written but also very much exists in modern day. The woman he speaks of in the first sentence was not his…

Both of the Johnny Appleseed stories were interesting. The first story was much more simple, the words were not complex, few details, and it was straightforward. In the second story it had more details, the vocabulary was much richer, and it was more enjoyable. I began to think of my kindergartners, when we read a story with more details both in writing and illustration they are much more engage and we can have a conversation about the story. We should provide books that are interesting and that students can have a discussion or question the theme/characters.…

Cataclysmic is that of the damage that society collectively has brought forth to both our inner and outer environments. The median size of a house in 2015 in the U.S.A was 2,467 square feet according to the Census Bureau and is only expected to grow. However, with all of this free space, one could shelter all the materials they do not actually use or just keep for the sentimental feeling brought upon by hedonistic materialism. Maybe store new five $100 dresses in an old dusty closet or maybe store away a never-used stainless steel barbecue grill in the three door garage. While materialism is not inherently bad, there are ways of being efficient while being modern to avoid the situations aforementioned.…

How Love May Not Provide Successful Comfort Warzones can be incredibly violent, terrifying, and gruesome places. Especially during the Vietnam War, when soldiers had very long deployments in horrid conditions, one major way to deal with the difficult environment was to remember that there was a world beyond it. Even in civilian life, a very positive way to deal with stress is to remember that there is a life outside of the stressor. In the short stories in his book The Things They Carried, Tim O’Brien explores how men use pre-traumatic images of beloved females to cope with trauma, and how human’s desire for permanence manifests in these traumatic moments. The girls in these stories symbolize peaceful, happier times as a mechanism for the men…

    Carr Vs Elton Analysis

The debate between E.H. Carr and G.R. Elton signifies the conflict between the “Old School” of historical studies and the Revisionist model. Carr proposes that there exists within historical studies the need for interpretation, and that there is no such thing as a universalized “truth” or “fact”. This is evocative of the Postmodernist phenomenon to critique and rethink approaches to history, which I will discuss later in this paper. Elton, on the other hand, emphasizes the universal “truth” within historical studies. He insists that there is no such thing as “subjectivity”, and all facts within historical sources are indeed just that – facts.…
