His father changed his birth name of Johnny Allen Hendrix to James Marshall Hendrix. Later taking on the nickname of Jimi, for its exotic looking appeal. Shortly after his last brother was born, his mother had left them. Hendrix only talked to his mother a few brief times before her passing away. His escape was music. Teaching himself how to play guitar at a young age. He got his first electric guitar at the age of fifteen and after practicing for hours on end, he began to perform. The Rocking Kings and the Tomcats were the first bands for Hendrix. In 1961, he enlisted in the United States Army as an alternative to going to prison. While a soldier, he was capable of finding the time to continue his dream as a musician. A loosely organized band was created called the Casuals. Billy Cox played bass and continued on with Jimi for future bands. He wasn’t in the army very long before being honorably discharged on the basis of unsuitability. He soon moved to Tennessee and began playing in a few different bands while there. In 1966, he caught the eye of Linda Keith, who in turn got him his first manager, Chas Chandler. Hendrix had formed the all-black-power-trio music group Band of Gypsys. Speculation is that he formed the band to appease members of Black Power movement and use the band as a way to speak-up for civil rights.
