In the street of a large city at 10:00 p.m. at night seems to be least likely place to find an experienced doctor working with patients, but that is exactly where someone could find. Dr. Jim Withers. In Pittsburg, Withers is recognized as the “Street Doctor” for the time he devotes outside of his work at the hospital to help and cure the homeless. With his fearless dedication to help, Withers has managed to help thousands of people who are passed daily by others with disgust. Every day, the homeless are ignored by people who have the ability to help which causes them to lose all hope. That hope is returned when Withers stops by to provide medical care and help them to an opportunity for a better life. His help would not come without certain …show more content…
For Jim, it is his ability to place himself in the situations of others. To fully understand and gain the respect of the homeless, Jim literally studied and read books on how it feels to be homeless. He did not assume he knew what was best beforehand. If he had, he would not have built strong relationships with the homeless because frankly, many of them are intimidated and fearful of personnel in the medical field. He dresses as a homeless person when he ventures out in the city. If it was cold, “He gets down to their level, suffers with them, feels some of what they feel" (Plummer). Many people are not willing to offer themselves to this extent. As a result, the homeless treat him the same way they treat one another, with respect. On the other hand, Jim is treated by the ordinary people in a quite different manner. People view him as less when he is dressed raggedly because they think value is based on how a person looks instead of who they actually are. Jim now recognizes that the homeless are like diamonds in the rough with unique and fascinating stories of their own. At first, he was the only one to realize their value due to the doubtful opinions of others in his …show more content…
Instead of taking matters into his own hands, Jim could have proposed a course of action to the city council. The city council would have been more influential on doctors than one man. The help of the many would out work the help of the few. As a result, more homeless people could have been treated on a more regular basis. An increase number of doctors would allow them to revisit specific patients more often, creating a better understanding of their medical history because they have worked with

Among the streets of New York, as well as many other places across America for that matter, the number of homeless is steadily rising. In her essay, “On Compassion,” Barbara Lazear Ascher examines the growing problem while describing a particular expirience which explains her interest in the topic. Her example is very riveting, and the exposing of the problem gives way to theories towards human compassion and empathy, which I found to be very agreeable. As a New York City resident, Ascher is no stranger to homelessness.…

The overused saying “don’t judge a book by it’s cover,” although cheesy remains very notable. One cannot make judgements based on appearance, or you could overlook the raw talent, or inspiring story everyone has to offer. Homeless people come from all types of backgrounds and cannot be generalized. However, the most prominent moral this novel taught me was that one person cannot help everyone, but everyone can help someone. Saying hello to a man on the streets may seem insignificant to the other millions of things you do in your day, but for that man it makes his whole day.…

On a blazing hot afternoon, I was with my Peer Ministry. It seemed like our whole group, interacting with the sizable population of homeless on the streets of Riverside, CA, was working like a fast food crew; we were distributing food from our cars at a superhuman pace. This activity seemed like any ordinary job our group did together — until I handed a brown paper bag to a homeless African American man. His expression registered shock. He put his hand on my shoulder and said, “Son, how did you know I needed help?”…

There are numerous people who are in fact homeless when one would not even be able to tell because they conceal it. Thus, I also challenge the stereotype that all homeless people look the same or carry themselves the same way, that is with raggedy clothes, unhygienic, etc. when that is not true. No one in Justin's class knew or could tell he was homeless. Not everyone has a support system that consists of family or friends and the ones who may need desperately may be the quietest or overlooked on.…

With that growing number of homeless people there needs to be a plan on how to accommodate them so that they are still being taken care of because the homeless are the ones who are most affected by physical and mental illnesses. According to David Maness “Homeless persons are more likely to become ill, have greater hospitalization rates, and are more likely to die at a younger age than the general population” (Maness 2014). Some of the biggest illnesses the homeless face is cardiovascular disease, mental illness, substance abuse, traumatic brain injury, and skin and foot problems (lice and athletes foot) are things they face and need help getting…

Every day as I leave my home heading to school or work, I pass the same dirty and hopeless faces. The traffic of the interstate exit seems to provide a population of people who contribute to the welfare of these desperate individuals. In that short five miles of travel, I pass homeless sleeping on benches, wondering the streets, and standing with cardboard signs asking for help and then blessing me for my spare change. I define my community as the area in which I live and the neighboring streets, limiting the borders to just a 5 mile radius and the people of this community are those who live and work here like I do. Although the problem of homelessness exists in a much broader scale than just the few streets connected to my home, the daily reminder of seeing…
