Mark Twain once said “the two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why” (Twain, ND). Ballet has always been near and dear to my heart, so much so that I took a year off from high school to pursue it on a professional level. During my year away I came to the firm conclusion that there was far more in life I cared to pursue then the four-mirrored walls I had come to know as home. I was lucky enough to find an amazing high school with a specialized “pre-med” program, the director with whom I have come to know far more as a mentor than as a teacher. Dr. Carlos Pulido is one of the wisest men I have met to date, a retired chief of surgery and certified army trauma surgeon, he is a remarkable example of all I hope to achieve in my life.…

In the small town of Sheridan, Wyoming mostly in the summer you can pull into town and see a homeless person standing under the bridge of exit 20 holding up a sign asking for a ride to another town or sitting across the street from taco bell asking for money because they have none and they need to get their dog food. In the article “Million-Dollar Murray” it discusses how to help the homeless and end homelessness all together. Morally many people think it is the correct thing to do but, do they really deserve it? It isn’t fair to the taxpayers, they get free apartments, and they don’t give back to society for helping them. Helping the homeless isn’t fair to taxpayers because their money is going to waste on hospital bills and to jails because…

Other risk factors are medical conditions, inadequate job skills, lack of education, domestic violence, addictions, and mental illness (Olivet, Paquette, Hanson, & Bassuk, 2010).…

Michael Oher agonized that, “The ending of my story is unique, but the beginning of my story is, sadly, far too common.” The book I read was I Beat the Odds: From Homelessness to The Blind Side and Beyond by Michael Oher and Don Yaeger. This book talks about the struggles he went through from when he was little and some facts about the foster system. Statistics show that only one-third of all children eligible to be adopted in the foster care system will end up with parents or permanent legal guardians. Many teenagers dislike going to school but for some, school and sports are their only escape of the reality of being homeless. If these kids don't have sports to keep them going they would just drop out of school and they would keep the cycle going for their future kids. Isaiah Lambs is a perfect example of why having an athletic program at every school is important. Isaiah was sleeping pretzeled in the back of his mom's tiny car for months on end. He also missed so many tournaments because him and his mom couldn't afford the entrance fees.…
