In 1980 Jim White rebuilt the McFarland High School cross country team in California. Due to Coach White's leadership and guidance he led the 1987 cross country team to the California state championship. Because of White's effort to not only help the boys to become better runners, but he mended their personal lives and helped to give many of them a future they could never have dreamed of before. After Jim White rebuilt the McFarland High School cross country team, they won nine CIF California State Championships in cross country in the years 1987, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2000 and 2001. White's family is in the minority in their new town, and poverty is surrounding them. White moves into the poor Californian Latino school as a teacher and assistant football coach. During gym class, White realizes some of the boys are very gifted at running. In an effort to help the kids, he quits his assistant coaching job and restarts the old cross country program that was cut a few years back. As coach White begins to build relationships with the runners he realizes these kids not only struggle at school but also back home. Many of them work hard long days in the ?filed field? just to support their families, so there is no time for education. Jim White not only gives the kids a place to be their best on the course but gives them hope for a future. White and his team overcome poverty and personal struggles as a team and do the unexpected, make it to the cross country state championship.
