Jim Thorpe Imagine flying past defenders, swishing into a crisp white net. Diving into a grassy, muddy endzone for a winning touchdown. Or jumping over a bar higher than ever seen in your life. These are just a few things Jim Thorpe accomplished. He was mostly known for his incredible athletic ability in track and field, but was outstanding in many other sports as well. People even suggest that he is the greatest athlete of all time. And it all started in an old log cabin in Oklahoma. Growing up, Jim had a pretty rocky childhood. He went through a lot of tough times throughout his childhood. Born May 28, 1888 with his twin brother Charlie Thorpe, who he was always ahead of, except for in school. His brother started helping him at school. When everything was at its height, it crashed. His brother had died. Since they were in a tightly jammed school, Charlie had died of pneumonia. They did not let Jim go home to see his brother, so when he heard he ran all the way home, which was twenty-three miles. He went to a different school, and that was where he sadly heard that his mother had passed away. After that, his Dad was bitten by a snake and shortly after died (1). In the prime time of Jims’ life, his was better. Jim Thorpe started his American football career at the age of twenty six (2). He excelled in football, starting as a halfback, place kicker, punter, and defensive man for the Canton Bulldogs (4). He served as one of the League's first presidents (2). In 1913, he started playing baseball for the Atlanta Braves. Jim played mostly outfield, and had a batting average of.372. He made about $250 per game, with inflation that is about $7,7900 dollars today (2). He had multiple jobs after he finished his sports career. Although he made most of his money from playing sports, he starred in some Hollywood movies. Mostly western movies, and sports films, and he worked many odd jobs after that
