In 2011, Arthur began to have serious medical issues, and eventually was diagnosed with “Lou Gehrig’s Disease.” As time continued to go by his condition kept becoming worse and soon he was not able to move at all. Obergefell became Arthur’s main care taker and soon took care of all of his needs and stayed by his side as much as he could. Obergefell and Arthur decided to get legally married as they noticed their time together was becoming short. They chose the state of Maryland, because same-sex marriage was legal and only one partner had to be present to receive the license. Obergefell wanted more, he wanted for both him and his partner to be able to be in Maryland at the same time. Obergefell received thirteen thousand dollars with the help from friends, family, and associates. He used the money to hire a medical plane that would be able to take both himself and Arthur to Maryland. Instead of finding another person, they used Arthur’s aunt Paulette Roberts to officiate their wedding ceremony.
