Jim Corti's Mamma Mia !: A Greek Musical

Mamma Mia! is often judged as a Greek tragedy full of drama, heartbreak and simplicity. This misconception could not be more wrong. It is, in fact, a fiendishly difficult musical. Quite a few people still make this assumption, and of those people, almost all come out in the end exuberant and enthralled in the disco era vibes. Mamma Mia is first and foremost a Greek comedy about a silly messed up wedding.
Despite being a comedy, it is difficult to find much to laugh at in this production. This relief does come from Jennifer Knox (Tanya) and Sara Sevigny (Rosie) who play the two aunts of Sophie, the main character and fiancee. Knox has the perfect tone for Does Your Mother Know while Sevigny is a delight during Take A Chance On Me, sang with Steve O'Connell. O'Connell plays one of Sophie's three possible fathers. There is nothing very special to mention in terms of praise or flaws for him. The same goes for his other two comrades, Michael Gillis and Jeff Diebold. Gillis, however, could have tried to make his surprise at the end flow a bit better with the rest of the production, however that is not his fault, but the scripts.

He had a few lead actors who were not cut for the task. For these few, the correct pitch varies so much that it is not easy listening I am used to. Amy Montgomery is mistakenly cast as Donna, the mother of the bride and the main character in Mama Mia!. It is clear from the beginning that she has much talent and potential. However, she makes the mistake of playing the role as frustrated almost the entire time. Despite her flaws she does have some very enjoyable scenes. In the crucial act 2 song The Winner Takes It All, Amy Montgomery is able to make it through almost flawlessly. In contrast, song Slipping Through My Fingers is once again she becomes seemingly frustrated. This is unexplainable as to this is a wistful song about children growing

Phantom of the Opera had several adaptations including the 2004 film with the same title starring Gerard Butler as Erik. In the movie the romance of between two childhood friends occurred after Christine became a star and that Raoul saw her and remembered her. There is a line in the musical Spamalot where Sir Robin sings to King Arthur; “In any great adventure, if you don 't want to lose ... you won 't succeed on Broadway if you don 't have any Jews!" (PBS, Broadway Musicals). If you can look past the sweeping generalization, Sir Robin’s surprising lyric turns out to be very true about musicals. Historians have recognized that Jewish immigrant culture heavily influenced the content of musical theatre when it was popularized in America during the early twentieth century. But in turn, it was the sociopolitical and racial climate of the 20th century that inspired the creative and thematic content of Jewish productions as well.…

Hamilton: An American Musical was written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who gained a fascination with Alexander Hamilton after reading a biography about the historical figure. The Broadway musical is loosely based on the life of founding father Alexander Hamilton, following his journey from a poor child in the Caribbean to George Washington’s right hand man. The work features many well rounded characters and a fascinating plotline, but perhaps the most interesting aspect is its delivery.…

Opera is considered one of the most complex art forms. It is a theatrical vocal- instrumental piece consisting of acts and scenes. It incorporates singing, acting, orchestral music, costumes, often ballet as a type of the dance, and scenery (libretto) which is 'the script' of an opera. Libretto can be written by a composer himself, or by poets and novelists. The most common way is an adaptation of the plays, novels or tales, such as libretto by Luigi Ilica and Guiseppe Giacosa which is based on the novel 'Scènes de la vie de bohème' by Louis- Henri Murger.…

Over There I have always been a fan of musicals and the great songs sung on the musical stage or in the Hollywood movies. My one all time favorite musical was about the life of songwriter and composer George M. Cohen who wrote a lot of patriotic song in his time. One of most inspiring and wonderful songs which he wrote during WWI was “Over There”. It was equally inspirational to the young men marching off to war and fighting overseas as it was to everyone who remained on the home-front.…

Robert De Niro has made a career playing gangsters and hardened criminals in films like ‘Goodfellas’, ‘Casino’ and ‘The Godfather: Part II’, which is why it’s so resoundingly impactful when he plays a nice, emotionally susceptible man in films like ‘Meet the Parents’. Nancy Meyer’s has made a career capitalizing on subtle feminism and perfectly encapsulating periods in life. Anne Hathaway is one of the best actresses to ever grace the silver screen, and she’s never made a film in which her charm didn’t vastly improve upon the film at hand. All of these accolades are what excited me for this film, and thankfully the film doesn’t disappoint even remotely.…

In Hamilton: An American Musical the device of rhyme in the song Alexander Hamilton is used to connect the different ideas and topics our first Treasury Secretary experienced in his life. Rhyme is the sequence in which the piece is written with the end sound creating a rhyme scheme “a” “b”. He also uses imagery to help narrate Hamilton’s traumatic detailed intense story. Situations such as when Aaron Burr cites Alexanders father leaving him and his mother because he went into debt and then his mother dying in their bed leaving him an orphan going from place to place until he could get out of the island. Alliteration is used to keep the flow between each of the characters narrations part about their time with him.…

Scream Factory broadens its horizons a bit by releasing the Blu-ray debut of the Oscar-winning dark comedy “Death Becomes Her” in a Collector’s Edition. Although it definitely fits into the supernatural realm, many would argue Robert Zemeckis’s 1992 hit is a little tame to be released under Shout Factory’s horror umbrella. Either way, it merits the extra special care it gets from the company. A star-studded cast headed up by Bruce Willis, Goldie Hawn, and Meryl Streep all give elegantly wicked performances based on a story by Martin Donovan (“The Courtship of Eddie’s Father”) and David Koepp (“Jurassic Park,” “Panic Room”).…
