In the short story "The Things They Carried," all the soldiers physically carry heavy loads as well as emotional. Although they all have something interesting, one character stood out to me the most. Jimmy Cross, who is the Lieutenant of the Alpha Company, carries letters to remind him of the love he has for a girl back home named Martha. Jimmy would hold the letters and "imagine romantic camping trips into the white mountains in New Hampshire," (615) and think about what he could be doing instead of being stuck in the jungles of Vietnam. Even though Martha does not love him back he still liked to pretend that she did.…

Tim O’brien is not only a character in this novel but also the author of The Things They Carried. In the novel and as well as real life, Tim is a very outspoken and blunt person when it comes to voicing his opinions and beliefs. Coming into war as a draftee, Tim did not believe that this war was justified and didn't support the war. Tim wasn't the most excited to be in war but I'm pretty sure he was part of a big majority that wasn't excited to be at war and the fact that Tim didn't like dirt, tents, or outdoor types of things in general didn't help. O’Brien felt obligated to go to war as he felt that the world was watching and didn't want to let them down by not going.…

From my point of view I disagree with Callarman’s opinion on Chris McCandless about how he was fool and an arrogant fool. The reason for my disagreement is because I believed Chris had reason for his “journey of solitude.” I have also gathered concrete details that defends my statement for his behavior. It is our judgement and ideals created by society that caused people like McCandless to drift away. He should not be portrayed as a madman without a proper reason or fact.…
