Pan Am Flight 103, a flight from Frankfurt to Detroit, left London Heathrow Airport on 21 December 1988 almost an hour late. About half an hour later, it was destroyed by a bomb, killing 270 people. In 1997, Abolghasem Mesbahi, a former senior Iranian intelligence official who switched alliances to Germany, claimed Iran contracted the bombing to Ahmed Jibril, leader of the terrorist group Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP-GC). In a 2001 sworn deposition controlled by United States government lawyers, a CIA spy with contacts in high places said that about 10 to 15 high officials in the Syrian government were sure of Jibril’s involvement in Pan Am 103.
