Poets and poetry have existed for many years now. Storytelling, memorizing and acting out poems as music is playing is an African oral tradition primarily done by “griots”. Griots were African American individuals whom remembered historical events to document history and to preserve cultures (Omodele, 2011). Griots told their stories to the people through poems and performances which dated back to earlier times. However, between 1960 and 1970 an outpouring of poems began to focus on the artist in the role of griots (Lowney, 2012). During this change of focus artist began to create a more unique style of telling their stories and poetry. Advertisers have recognized the value of including spoken words in advertisements due to the deep emotional connection that the artist are able to make with their audience. Establishing the relationship between the audience and a product is done by the speaker to make a profit. This connection convinces the audience and makes it easier to to persuade them into believing or supporting an idea, brand or label. To explain, the article “Advertising’s fifteen basic appeals”, by Jib Fowles, briefly describes how. Fowles acknowledges fifteen appeals that advertisers use to pursue consumer’s choices (Fowles, 2012). These appeals focus on feeling safe, success, sex, curiosity, guidance and other life experiences or realities that could cause change in individuals lives which are some of the same appeals that spoken word artist perform (Fowles, 2012). The appeal of guidance is the need of wanting to be protected, shielded, and guarded in our lives (Fowles, 2012). The spokesman for All State Insurance Dennis Haysbert, speaks with a deep convincing voice in his commercials to persuade the viewers that with All State Insurance you will be protected and always in good hands. His deep voice, prominent stance, along with along with only a few spoken words in the commercial demonstrate his masculinity to both men and women which supports him to achieve his goal of selling
