Cathy, I have to admit I felt the same way and have shared some of your same questions. Over the past few weeks, I have been taking an online class about the Eternal Family that has shad some light upon the matter of the temple and why it is so important. If we first understand the purpose of the temples then I believe your other questions will start to come into the light as well. As part of the restoration of Jesus Christ’s true church the sealing power of the Melchizedek Priesthood was conferred upon both Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery. Thus, restoring the sacred sealing authority through the priesthood in which those ordinances are valid and binding both here on earth and in heaven. Elder Richard G. Scott, in his talk “Receive the Temple Blessings,” that it is our duty to be personally worthy as this is an essential requirement to enjoy the blessings of the temple (“Receive the Temple Blessings,” Elder Richard G. Scott, Ensign, May 1999, 25). Once we have been deemed worthy to enter the temple we can seek counsel from our bishop prior to going to the temple, he can also arrange for meetings with an individual to converse with to fully understand the sacred experiences within the temple. However, when we are at the temple you are welcome to bring someone close to you that has undergone the endowment and sealing ordinances to help walk you through the experience. We must remember that once outside the temple walls, we do not speak of specifics. Elder D. Todd Christofferson reminds us that “our willingness to take upon us the name of Christ and keep His commandments requires a degree of faith, but as we honor our covenants, that faith expands” (“The Power of Covenants,” Elder D. Todd Christofferson, Ensign, May 2009, 19-32). As I began to read The Gift of the Jews I automatically saw the authors perspective on all of humanity. He says within the first sentences of his book that the Jews started it all, and by “it” he means everything we value as a society, everything that nonetheless makes us human. As the book progresses he goes on to talk about the story of the bible, from Egypt to Babylon all while interconnecting everything to the Jews or their version of the bible. Thomas Cahill begins his book with discussing “The Temple in the Moonlight.” This story begins in the 5th millennia where our history began, with the first human.…

The Hurva Synagogue was the largest Synagogue in the Jewish quarter prior to its ultimate destruction. “On May 27, 1948, Jordanian soldiers forced entry into the side of the 84-year old Hurva synagogue by detonating a 200-liter barrel of explosives. Light also creates the emotions in James Ingo Freed’s United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. It may not play as important of a role as in the Jewish Museum but still has some purpose of light and dark qualities to it. “The visitor’s passage through the building is a spatial and emotional journey through open light spaces into damp cramped dark spaces, over ramps and bridges, and through doorways that evoke the ‘selection’ of victims in the camp.” Freed’s idea is to create an emotional rollercoaster throughout the building similar to what a Jew would have gone through from before the war where they were normal, to the change of classification to vermin, and finally to freedom to reflect on the loss and how to cope with…

I like to think of the I-Kuan-Tao Zhong Shu Temple as my second home. I find that the Temple is a magical place, no matter where it is, Taiwan, San Francisco, Honolulu, or Michigan, they all share the same atmosphere. It is a mixture of warmth, love, care, and security. I am always greeted by warm smiles as I enter the Temple, community members will ask me how I have been and how school is going lately. And even though my usual answer to anyone else is simply a “good,” I know that at the Temple, I can truly express myself with no worry of any judgements.…

The idea of “the scripture principle” comes from the exile of the Jewish society from Babylon. This was the answer, or solution, to the problems the Jewish community was facing. Under these circumstances, the written Torah and the synagogue were formed. As we have learned in class, the Christians of the time received a lot of their history from the Jews. A lot of their history events even overlap at times.…
