Fearless Movie Analysis

Culturally I did not grow up with a lot of exposure to Chinese culture. I am always interested in learning and decide to pick a culture I was not completely familiar with. I chose to watch a foreign movie called Fearless, also known as Jet Li’s Fearless in the United States. I chose to watch a movie because I enjoy watching and learning from films. I have never watched a foreign film so I was intrigued to experience one. I honestly was not sure what to expect with a foreign movie, except I knew I would be reading subtitles. I presume I thought it would be about issues and situation that I could not relate to. I went in thinking that the plot would feature a lot about the culture and I would not understand parts of the movie. The apparel and hairstyles were different which I anticipated. I understood the plot, it was not misconstrued in any way by cultural differences. Jet Li’s Fearless focuses on Huo attaining to get his family’s honor and pride back. The film’s attention is on Huo individually rather than how his actions affect society or his family. Huo drinks a lot, I thought the film would be more conservative as far as drinking. He is very selfish in the beginning and arrogant so the film did well at capturing his egotism. Later in the movie is shows more of how he helps society against the western culture invading his country. The movie was relatable, Huo faced personal tragedies, struggled and persevered through his desolation. He learned valuable lessons about compassion and empathy. He then went to show the world he had changed and try to teach what he learned throughout his own self-discovery. I enjoyed the plot and the lessons it taught. The film perceives Western people as very tall, big, and mean, which is probably how they truly perceive
