John 11:17-32 presents Jesus’ conversations with Martha and Mary as well as his proclamation about his true identity. In his dialogue with Martha, Christ is acknowledged by her imperfectly as “Lord.” Martha knows that Jesus has power and authority over the process of dying and death; however, to her, he is just a miracle-worker and not the Christ, even though she calls him “the Messiah the Son of God” (v. 27). In an attempt to help Martha understand who he is, Christ reveals his identity to her through his “I Am” proclamation.
