Jesus’ Sufferings Perhaps nothing can be clearer of Jesus’ humanity than through His sufferings. Jesus certainly did not live a pain free life filled with nothing but joy and comfort. Nothing could be further from the truth. His humanity enables Him to relate to us in a way that angels or animals never can. “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin” (Hebrews 4:15). Jesus was lead out into the desert, by the Holy Spirit, to be tempted by Satan in three ways. The first was a temptation of hunger. Satan tried to attack Jesus by appealing to his physical discomfort of being hungry which certainly reveals that Jesus must have been human to be able to experience a human hunger. The second temptation Jesus faced was concerning the testing of God to save Jesus if He asked. Jesus replied to Satan with scripture and fought against that temptation, but still the devil tried one last time to tempt Him and evoke doubt into Jesus’ mind. The third was Satan tempting Christ to “save the world” in an easier, far less humiliating way than death on a cross. Satan was offering the Lord a “Quick Fix.” Each time, Jesus quoted scripture and rejected the devil’s destructive temptations. Yet, it is still important to understand that Jesus actually felt tempted. He knew better than to act on any of the things that Satan tempted Him with, but nevertheless, because of His humanity, Jesus still had to fight against that temptation because He was actually experiencing it. It is the perfect example to the rest of the world that temptation can be overcome. Jesus knew exactly how to guard the truth of scriptures and rejected the lies that Satan tried to tempt Jesus
