He came down to earth as a baby, giving up his divinity to live among humans. By doing this, he was even lower than the angels that he once reigned over. By becoming a lowly human, he became subject to temptations. He faced the same things the humans did such as illness, pain, cruelty and confusing hierarchies. He got stinky from long days of travel, got splinters in his fingers, worked for his food and might’ve even felt the urge to get married and start a family of his own. Hebrews 2:17 says it plainly, “Wherefore it behooved him in all things to be made like unto his brethren, that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make a propitiation for the sins of the people.” The Bible talks about Jesus being our Advocate (1 John 2:1) and Mediator (1 Timothy 2:5). Jesus is our direct pipeline to God. Like a lawyer in a courtroom, Jesus represents his people so they can be fairly judged. He is also the one who changed the covenant between God and man from a being a bunch of rules, to being a single law: love. By also being our advocate, Jesus goes to God when we pray for forgiveness and pleads with Him. Jesus is like that one friend who makes sure there is peace among his companions.
So with all this being said, Jesus has more than enough reasons to qualify him to be our high priest. He is way more qualified than the priests from the tribe of Levi and unlike them, Jesus is never changing and steadfast. People know that they can depend on him to keep us connected to God. We don’t have to worry about Jesus sinning and cutting us off from salvations. Through Jesus, we no longer have to go through a human priest to confess our sins or ask for help.
