Jesus Cross Shape

Decent Essays
This painting is religious, representing a choice for a woman to accept the forgiveness of Jesus Christ or to not to. The cross shape represents Jesus, the light coming through representing good. The darkness of the room represents sin, or a place that you should not be at in life, and need help getting out of. It can also represent choosing to allow someone to help you out of a dark place in life that you do not necessarily want to be in. Sometimes our own stubborn pride can get in the way of this, even if we really do need the help.

The work that I am analyzing is Bathsheba After the Bath by Jan Steen (1626-1679). I believe the meaning of the painting shows exactly what women had to endure to be presented to a man of high royalty and had no rights in the matter to reject his advances. The gloomy colors in the painting correlates with the emotion that Bathsheba expresses. Examining the painting I found interesting props surrounding Bathsheba and the maidservants. The painting tells the story of how King David sent for Bathsheba.…

The placement of the image would encourage children more than adults to pursue their faith. Her mother did not see the appeal in the painting because for her it was immature. If the artist directed the focus towards an older audience he would have shown more of the suffering Christ to appeal to the older audience…

The items in the room are all painted with extreme detail from the items in the back to the folds of the clothing on the two figures on the front. The whole room is filled with these detailed items like the candles in the front of the painting and the window and pot that are more in the back. The figures that are to the front are Mary (who is on the left) and the archangel Gabriel and this is the scene where Gabriel tells Mary that she will be blessed with God’s son. The figures are both big and bulky; the detail to the folds in their clothing is very geometrical which makes the painting lose some of its realism. On the top right side of the painting you can see the baby Jesus zooming through the window to the womb of Mary, Campin did this because he wanted to capture the exact moment when the holy trio was unified.…

Not only does the spotless mirror create an allusion of purity, it also reflects some two other people in the same room, and the inference that the mirror creates is that some people are witnessing the private wedding. Besides the mirror, the wall has crystal prayer beads, and at the top side of a chair with a high back that stands beside a bed, an image has been carved; this is the image of Saint Margret who protects women at the time of childbirth. The image of the saint and the prayer beads indicate that the couple is pious. The windowsill has oranges that show the innocence of humankind prior to the time Adam and Eve underwent disgrace; they also signify that the couple is wealthy. Were it not for the medium that Eyck used in making the painting of the couple at the private wedding, the attendant inferences would have been of a different nature.…

His shirt is a forest green and navy blue plaid patterned long sleeve flannel. From looking at the painting it is clear to see that the man is seated at a table with his elbows rested on the surface. His two frail hands are folded together and pressed against his forehead, as if he is bowing his head in prayer. Placed on the table in front of him is a loaf of bread with one end cut off, a bowl containing liquid of brown color, a knife which is right next to the bowl, a thick bible with a green cover, and laying on top of the bible is a pair of glasses folded, laying upside down. The wall beside the man is a brown color with light reflecting on it.…

At first glance the true meaning cannot be seen; this is until you look further beyond what actually meets the eye. When first peering at the painting, you will find your eyes drawn to the linage used in the column. The column has been placed as a replacement to her actual spine, and with the broken and battered appearance it symbolises the injury that she occurred in the horrid incident from when she was just 17 years of age. When taking a careful note at looking at the elements that have been used throughout; you may not be able to recognize the small nails straight away. They have been strategically placed through her skin.…

The men who once mocked Christ of his sacrifice, suffered a painful and horrific death themselves. The theology behind the painting illustrates that Christ is unmerciful toward the sinners and merciful to the followers that stood by his side in horrid times. The woman in the painting is an expecting mother who is coming to the end of her pregnancy. I believe she is looking down at her stomach, which seems to have a skeleton baby head in it, hoping that everything goes well with her delivery. The women at her feet are in a kneeling position praying for the same thing. At first I thought this paining symbolized a still born baby, but with the title Hope II, I think it has more to do with an up and coming birth. Behind the pregnant woman is a yellowish white figure, which to me looks to be angel wings.…

For many, there is a point of no return for being able to make into that golden place known as Heaven. The people try and try to make themselves in a way “good” again by doing anything anyone asks. Christ wants nothing less than to send people to Heaven but if one cannot abide by all of his rules then he will not send them to that place. In the painting, it is very easy to pick out Jesus Christ and Mary since the two are located in the middle of the painting as well as there is some sort of glow shining behind them.…
