Importance Of Being A Disciple Of Jesus

Decent Essays
For me being a disciple of Jesus means that Jesus is my leader and I am his follower, and that he has called me to lead other as I follow him and his example. Now doing this is easier said than done and I will mess up and make mistakes along the way but nobody is perfect and we all have room for improvement. While it is important to know that we must also keep in mind that we should be striving to be in the light and not just avoiding the dark. Being a disciple of Jesus is a commitment that someone makes whenever he or she is baptized. Before that moment you are a unbeliever and aren’t saved, but when you are baptized and say that you make Jesus your Lord and Savior, then you make a commitment to follow him, because when you say you make him …show more content…
You are responsible for making an effort to grow in your relationship with Jesus. It is also the responsibility of the teachers and mentors to help you in this, but you should always be striving to grow in your relationship with Jesus on your own. The Bible should be your key resource in doing this but having mentors to help guide you and help you is also important. Reading the Bible and prayer are two of your main ways of learning more about God and growing in a relationship with God. Mentors are a huge help you since they can keep you accountable and help direct you in your spiritual journey. Going to church is also important since Jesus says it’s important to remain community with one another and church is a great way to achieve that. Not only that but going to church and being with a community of believers can be so uplifting to your …show more content…
First a disciple should believe that God is the only God, that he is sovereign, that he is he the creator of the universe and of everyone, and that he sent Jesus to die on the cross for our sins, (John 3:16). Second a disciple should believe that the Holy Spirit is part of the trinity and in so is a part of God. The Holy Spirit is also a part of every disciple/christian and that the Holy Spirit gives us power, (Acts 1:8). Church is not a building, it is a body of believers. As Jesus said “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20). I believe that you should try to be in church as often as possible. Things do come up that prevent you from going to church but being in community with the church is important. Being in community at church is not enough, though it is important. Being in community with one another is also important. This should include mentors, those that are more spiritually mature, and peers. Acts 2:42-47 shows a great example of what community/fellowship should look like. Salvation is not earned. It was and is given through Jesus and the cross. To receive salvation one must first believe that Jesus is their Lord and Savior then they must be baptized. After that they should make a continually effort in grow more spiritually

What this means is that with Christ as head of the Church, the church body is served in the act of providing leadership. Church leaders are not the only ones who become aware of their place at the foot of the cross, but all within the body of Christ. Looking through the lens of the Bible, servant-leadership liberates the church from abusing power, thus promoting mutual respect toward one another, which is a form of love. Furthermore, a servant-leader is to invest himself in the lives of his people—that is the church community.…

Throughout The Cost of Discipleship you are able to see the main messages Bonhoeffer is trying to make with each chapter. The main themes I am going to be writing about in this paper start with the type of grace you are trying to receive from God whether it is cheap or costly. The next theme would be the type of obedience Bonhoeffer talks about it being single-minded and the obedience they give. In this book Bonhoeffer talks a lot about discipleship and how it is shown from both the individual and from the community standpoint following in the way of the disciples before them. The view that Bonhoeffer has on these themes can be seen being different from other churches and beliefs people may have when reading this book.…

Week Three Devotional God is in the people business and the command is simple; go, baptize, and teach. Why? Because Jesus, being in the form of God thought it not robbery to be equal with God, said so. The slave is not greater than the Master and as His bond servants, our obedience is not optional but is a requirement. “Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God” (Rom 10:17 KJV). It seems that as we get older we become our hearing diminishes.…

We must nurture new disciples, as seen in Matthew 28:19-20. It is important to teach these individuals of why and how to relate the Bible as the revelation of God in matters of life, salvation, kingdom work and theology. This is vital to the new believers, because they must learn how they view God and his response to their lives; as well as to their response to the world. Through discipleship believers learn how to communicate God’s love to those who are lost and without love. They also learn how to convey God’s incarnational love to…

Introduction/ History Remembering one’s history is important in creating a productive and successful future. The Met does just that. During the early 1900s, the founding fathers of the Met experienced financial difficulties. These struggles helped orchestrate a new vision and inspired them to create an innovative PATH (prayer, attendance, tithes and offerings, and hospitable invitation), which continues today with nearly 1,100 members.…

The identity of the Christian church has become confused; the church is not the building people gather at on Sundays or holidays and it is not the denomination they belong to. Rather, the church transcends time, it is the totality of every believer ever. This misconception has lead to the rapid failure of the church today. Churches are becoming impersonal institutions that focus on their programs and attendance more than the people they are herding in. There is a serious lack of transformation and commitment in today's church.…

Ronald Witherup discusses the threefold priestly ministry by using three analogies: the priest as poet, sage, and teacher. However, three chapters seem to be only preaching-and-teaching oriented. He mentions the expected order of vocabulary in PDV #26: “the ministry of word, sacrament and pastoral charity” to match with the order of the threefold roles: prophet, priest, and king. The three analogies help to re-imagine a concrete picture of priestly expectation for the ministry of the Word. It is interesting enough to see the expectations developed in priestly models today because when Jesus chooses disciples, they are all ordinary people without specialty/competence at all.…

Via Salutis Outline: In the Via Salutis the saving work of Christ is shown with justification and sanctification through several sermons of John Wesley. In the sermon Original Sin, our sinful nature is depicted, “Now God saw that all this, the whole thereof, was evil; -- contrary to moral rectitude; contrary to the nature of God, which necessarily includes all good…”. God saw us for who we truly were but still allowed His relationship with us to move passed legal justification, which we truly deserve. Repentance is also a topic that will be noted in regard to sanctification.…

Charles (2010) a person has to commit himself to some local assembly of believers, so that he can submit to the accountability and responsibility that will help him to persevere in faith; he again summarized what Cyprian said, “Outside the church there is no salvation.” The Bible says we should exhort one another by teaching, encouragement and building each other with the word of God. Because we are going to live together with Christ, we have to live together with one another corporately now. We have to fellowship with others (1 Thess. 5:11), so we have to understand first the meaning of fellowship: fellowship is a bond where Christians have a common purpose and devotion that binds them to one another. John Piper (2017) says: “Fellowship is a mutual bond that Christians have with Christ that puts us in a deep, eternal relationship with one another.”…

The believer now has the responsibility to serve others within the community of faith. The perfect example of true servant-hood is Christ Himself. He lived a life free from enslaving lusts and instead chose to be a slave to the needs of others. The Holy Spirit is the power behind the believer’s ability to serve and bear fruit. As believers serve one another by being controlled by the Spirit, it will then effect the lives of the other believers, causing them to bear fruit in their own lives.…

As the disciples were always with Christ, watching, learning and understanding his ministry, so they too could teach as he did. So should we be. We do not always have time as leaders to give individual attention to each person, thus the reason we should always be raising up leaders who will give this care. We must remember that Jesus is the curriculum, our premise from which we live by and teach. Therefore we too should lead as followers, making disciples to the ends of the earth.…

Starting off this class with reading what Family Ministry is defined as opened up my view on how Family Ministry can be diverse in a variety of understanding. Diana Garland stated that “family ministry is any activity that directly or indirectly (1) forms families in the congregation community; (2) increases the Christlikeness of the family relationships of Christians; or (3) equips and supports families for the work to which they are called together.” Earlier in the reading she stated that “The flurry of programs called family ministry is the fear that Christian families are falling apart and need churches to strengthen and support them.” Diana Garland’s definition is what I strive for in ministry and I believe that she also is aware…
