The arrest of Jesus Christ is a tale of deep betrayal. Judas Iscariot, a member of the original twelve disciples, was contacted by Caiaphas the high priest. This is a profound and important moment in the crucifixion account. Jesus was not in a moment of doubt or weakness. This is the moment that Paul writes about later that Jesus became sin for us although he had never sinned. For the first time ever, the fellowship and relationship between the Father and the Son was severed. Jesus bore the sins of all mankind in that moment and became the perfect sacrifice on our behalf. The Law and the Old Testament sacrificial system pointed to this event. Jesus’s death spelled the end of the Old Covenant and the beginning of the New Covenant.
After Jesus died on the cross, there were some strange and supernatural events that occurred. First, many graves were opened and many bodies of the saints arose. Matthew 27:53 said these resurrected saints actually went into Jerusalem and were witnessed as being there. There was a great earthquake and darkness covered the land. These manifestations caused the soldier and ground zero to declare that surely Jesus was the Son of God. It was the unused tomb of Joseph of Arimathea. In order to abide by the laws of the Sabbath, Jesus’ body was prepared and buried in the tomb in a timely matter.
Although the physical circumstances of Jesus’ trial, crucifixion, and death are extraordinary, there are other more abstract things that are amazing. Several prophecies were fulfilled in the actions of the crucifixion. This is a great example of the actions of man even though it seems to be chaotic, God used to verify His plan. Jesus’ death conquered the power of death and ushered in the New Covenant of grace. This was further showed later in the power of his resurrection and the same power that raised Jesus up on the third day is the same power God through his grace has given us to live in us as a down payment until the day of
