Jesus As Figurative Language

Decent Essays
In the Synoptic Gospels, Matthew, Mark, and Luke describe the teachings of Jesus as being figurative language in the form of parables, or aphorisms (Harris, 2015). They wrote that Jesus never spoke to the public unless using a parable to get his point across. A parable is a quick story that uses some common event or object to help the person understand a situation more clearly. Jesus often used parables when talking about the growing church. He described the church as a mustard seed, which is extremely small but grows into a huge plant.

Aphorisms are short one-liners that are easily remembered. Jesus often used these to make a quick point and rarely spoke at length in the synoptic gospels. One of the most famous amorphisms was in the book

First Responder Injustice In the article No Firemen at Ground Zero this 9/11, author Michael Burke is livid that first responders were not invited to ground zero for the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Burke, brother of a fireman that sacrificed himself helping others in the twin towers, wrote this with the intent of showing that not inviting the first responders was wrong. Instead, the firemen and other first responders were invited to a different location where they could watch on TV. This decision was made by New York City Mayor Bloomberg.…

Proverbs are short, simple, but can fit many different cultural ideologies. Parables are simple stories used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson. Sayings such as, "Eye for an eye" and “A house is not a home” express multiple meanings but are summed up in a short, easy to say, and to-the-point message. An unexpected message interrupts the cycle of life for just enough time for intrigue to enter the mind. Within this gap fueled by interest, entire perceptions are up for reinvention and excitement can arise thus motivating action toward a goal.…

Deuteronomy 32:4 says “He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.” Metaphors about God and Jesus abound in The Bible. God is commonly referred to as a rock, as in this example.…

Throughout the Gospels of Matthew and John, each of them expressed rhetorical devices and rhetorical appeals in their stories but illustrated them in varying ways. According to the article by Matera, he expressed “symbolism that was applied to the evangelists by relating Matthews Gospel to the face of a human and Johns Gospel to the face of an eagle. This symbolism, which was specially developed by Irenaeus, enabled the church to see each of the Gospels as distinctive and yet gazing upon the same reality with a different face” (Matera, 2017). Also, in the book of John, he wrote his stories to provide readers to have a clear understanding of imagery. For instance, the cross that Jesus got nailed to played a major role when it came to imagery in the Bible.…

The Allegory of the Maple Syrup April 12, 2010 at 6:53am Throughout His ministry, Christ used stories and metaphor to teach the people the gospel. On the surface, the stories are just that-- stories. Some were allegories. An allegory is a Greek word. It means a figurative story full of meaning and metaphor, where each thing in the story represents something else.…

    c. In Simply Jesus, Wright explains the reasoning behind Jesus using parables as a method to paint a divine picture of what was happening right now; What life would look like with God as king through storytelling to reveal the character and redeeming qualities of God. The beauty and vision of His kingdom could be demonstrated through the telling of the parables and would also let people know that the kingdom is here. His teaching suggested that the time to repent and rejoice is not a future event, but happening in the here and now. His parables provided a way for people to understand that the laws of Moses were not enough, that God needed them to renew and transform their minds.…

This articulation is what drives the listeners and learners of this parable to think about themselves and communicate in pure relation to the Kingdom of God, what they deserve, what others deserve, and how rewards work in the Kingdom of God. Then, the unconscious theory of Jesus’ listeners and learners was that God was like the powerful men of the society who rewarded employees in proportion to their finished work. So, the theme of this parable is much like Paul’s highlighting on communicating this justification by God’s grace through faith in Christ Jesus when becoming the Righteous of God in Christ…

Due to my working hours, l can’t be there when my son’s come home from school, so my wife will have them call me at work shortly after they arrive. When my son’s and I converse generally we talk about the events of their day. recently my oldest son (13) calls and tells me of a bully who has called him names and my son is asking what he should do, how should he respond? It was during this conversation that the words of Jesus from John 15 ran through my mind: 18 “If the world hates you, [e]you know that it has hated Me before it hated you.19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.…

The Gospels part of the New Testament focuses in the life of Jesus Christ known to Christians as the Messiah of the Jewish people. Although the Jewish people resent him the Gospels tell a deeper story of how the world was redeemed from the condemnation of Adam and Eve. Throughout the Gospels examples of humility, compassion, and equality are told by parables. One that caught my attention was the Parable of the Laborers . The parable starts in the book of Matthew Chapter 20 Verses 1 through 16.…

This selection tells of a grandmother trying to impart wisdom to her son on how to raise her grandchildren despite his vehement arrogance. According to the Holy Bible, “Trained up a child that way they should go which will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). According to Fiola, (2012), “Sublime evidence of the appeal of allegory may found is Christ’s use of the parable: a brief narrative-usually allegorical but sometimes not that teaches moral (p. 472, paragraph 2) Character…

Jesus and Paul presented the unadulterated message of God to a diversity of people in an effective and relevant fashion. They remained faithful to God, while not compromising to appear pleasing to the world, yet relevant and inclusive. They understood what God wanted: He wants to reach all people with His message. The point is not to merely reach all people and it is not to merely have God’s message. Rather, it is to communicate the Kingdom of God in a way that one’s audience may understand.…

The parable tells of an enormous skyscraper filled to the brim with books and manuscripts. Every page was full of the teachings of God, and things that a follower of Christ should know. Some scholars spent time in this building, but the ordinary individual never did more than gawk at its immense size of the tower. God realized that his teachings were being lost in the massiveness of this library so he consolidated it down into one large encyclopedia of the most important thing to know, yet still the people were caught up in the verbiage and were missing the point.…

Between Matthew and Luke’s separate accounts of the parable of the lost sheep, there are some striking differences. In Matthew’s account of the story, he precedes his writing with the narrative of the disciples asking Jesus who the greatest amongst them was. Jesus responds by telling them that one must first be as humble as a child before they can enter the kingdom of heaven. Jesus then tells them that they “do not despise one of these little ones,” (ESV) because the Son of Man came to save the lost. He continues by telling the parable to His disciples, but Matthew records different aspects of it than Luke does.…

The gospels in the Bible are subjective; they do not just state facts, they are a narration about Jesus’ life and works, which makes it open to interpretation. Everyone has their own concept for Jesus’ ideals of his powers. The only source for historical Jesus is found in the four gospels. While the four gospels have similarities, they also contradict each other. They were also released years after Jesus’ death, and they are not first-hand accounts.…

Parables have long been a custom to educate people about pertinent morals. The Gospel of Matthew is constantly informative because it urges “the reader to identify with characters ‘who receive’ Jesus and ‘do’ God’s will” (Achtemeier 662). This claim is evident throughout the Gospel of Matthew and in The Parable of the Ten Virgins, as Matthew would constantly “persuade the reader to emulate their example” (Achtemeier 662). The Parable of the Ten Virgins symbolizes God’s Parousia during the eschaton. Matthew conveys a moral to his readers, indicating that those of the Church who are prepared for Jesus’ second arrival will be saved, and those who are not will suffer.…
