Reflection On Sacrifice As A Language Learner

While talking with Jessica she was well mannered with perfect posture. She spoke loudly and thought about her responses before she spoke. Jessica smiled during the entire interview and spoke with positive enthusiasm. She explained that she moved to the U.S. for family opportunities with work. Jessica is a visual learner who needs a lot of modeling to help her understand the lesson. She struggles with her speaking and pronunciation. Several points in the interview I noticed that she would skip words in a sentence, but I found it easy to figure out what she was saying. Jessica appears to be in the Speech Emergent category for ESOL learners. She speaks English well, but is still learning. While talking with her I noticed that she would say um …show more content…
One way she explains is that when she needs to go to the restroom she will give the teacher a signal of her fingers crossed up in the air and the teacher understands that she needs to use the restroom. The discourse of the English and Spanish have different patterns. When Jessica is using the English language she explains the difficulty between the two languages is hard and that the English language is much harder than Spanish. She mentioned in the interview that the sentence structure is different such as where the subjects go a and verbs go. She struggles with understanding all the parts of speech in the English language. After giving this interview, it is evident that there is a difficult struggle with pragmatics for ESOL students. While talking with Jessica, I could tell that she is very passionate about learning the English language, but at the same time, she is very frustrated. She struggles everyday trying to translate her language to the English speakers understand as well and translating English to Spanish in her head to understand the English Speaker. There are many things that she struggles to pick up on in everyday casual conversation as well as her written work. Grammar is very confusing for her and she feels it will always
