Andrew Jackson was known throughout his presidency and modern day as a down to earth person who listened to the grievances of the common man because he defied the elitist norms in the White House and trusted the word of a common man over the word of his ineffective advisors, however, his opponents claimed that he acted more like a king than a president because he disregarded the democratic process and opted to instead put friends of his into positions of power. One trait of Jackson that was adored by the common folk of America was that he stuck with his roots, even if it was contradictory to the elite norms that were in place. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said that “Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” In Cesar Chavez’s speech, he had the daunting task of simultaneously writing a eulogy in remembrance and love of Dr. King’s immensely influential life, and the job of delivering their shared message of promoting nonviolent action to oppose discrimination. Dear friends, family, and fellow brothers and sisters in our Lord Jesus Christ; today, we gather to honor a great man: Martin Luther. Martin was passionate, resistant, and unwavering in his love and devotion to the Church and its individuals! Martin was also very humble, and would most likely argue that he did nothing that his conscious and faith did not obligate him to do. Though it may have been the hand of God guiding him, I think it would be disrespectful to not acknowledge his hard work & the great things Martin managed to achieve during his short time with us.…
