Jersey Shore was a popular TV show on MTV between 2009 and 2012 about “Guidos”, or Americans of Italian descent in their twenties who rented a house together on the Jersey Shore, which was aimed at teenagers and people under thirty. Jersey Shore is affecting our culture in a negative way because the majority of people that watched it might have thought differently about Italians and think that’s all that they do. At one point, Jersey Shore became one of the most watched TV shows and I think it influenced some slang we use today. MTV is famous for making popular TV shows and sucking people in to watching them. They are really good at making reality shows. There are plenty of shows throughout the day on MTV that have nothing but drama. In my opinion, it gave Americans a bad stereotype of how Italians really are. The show made it seem like these Italians were very lazy and only cared about going out, drinking, going to the gym, and tanning. They all had a job at a t-shirt shop on the boardwalk and they would sometimes show up intoxicated. All the men on the TV show only cared about going to the gym, tanning, and doing their laundry, often referred to as “GTL”. A lot of the slang they used in the show is now used in today’s world. Some of the degrading things that they would say to women were to refer to them as grenades, which meant an ugly girl in a group of pretty girls. Another thing they would say was meatballs, which were younger Italian girls who liked to party and were small. They also had this one room called the “Smush Room” which was a spare room that the housemates would use if they wanted hook up with strange people. The show had cameras in this room as well and while it didn’t capture the raunchier parts, would certainly include before or after
