Jerry West Research Paper

When Jerry West was a boy, he was kept out of sports do to his small stature. He mostly spent all of his free time shooting basketball at a hoop that is nailed to his neighbors storage shed. That is the place where he started to perfect his shooting style and skills. Later on Jerry West finally worked his way onto East Bank high school’s varsity basketball team, he spent his junior year mostly on the bench. He was the first high schooler in West Virginia to score 900 in a single season. He was recruited by a lot of colleges, he decided to go to WVU in Morgantown. His older brother died in the Korean War.

Jerry grew six inches, during the summer in between his junior and senior year. In West’s senior year, he was the first player to ever in WV to score 900 points in a single season. Jerry’s senior year he led his team to a state championship. To thank Jerry West for the getting the team to a state championship, East Bank high school renamed itself West Bank high school in his honor, for one week. There were so many colleges that recruited him, but Jerry decided to stay in the state and go to WVU in Morgantown. In Jerry West’s years playing for WVU he was named an All American twice. Also while he played for WVU he led them to the NCAA championship, they lost to the University of California. Although Jerry was named the mvp of the tournament.

In the first round of the 1960 NBA draft, Jerry West was picked #1 overall. He was drafted by the Lakers. He improved the Lakers record big time. He played in the NBA for 14 seasons. Jerry was also in 3 All star games and named mvp in one. West took the Lakers to the playoffs every year except for the 1971 season. Jerry West is the man on the NBA logo.
