Jerry Sandusky Scandal Case Study

Improved Essays
Jerry Sandusky was considered an excellent citizen to the community during his tenure as an assistant coach at Penn State. He assisted under head coach Joe Paterno and founded a charitable organization that helped disadvantaged youth; unfortunately, he was a serial child rapist (Crandall, Parnell, & Spillan, 2013). The general public wished someone had known of his actions, when in fact, there were people at the University how did and they performed internal investigations.
Reviewing notes and emails of the high ranking officials at Penn State University reveal the actions were discussed with various groups, but not the board of trustees (Crandall, et al, pg. 19, 2013). The lack of recurrence is what led to criticism and the scandal to follow. The failure to follow crisis management rules; informing the board of trustees and protecting the victims resulted in the loss of jobs, pain for the university, and unforgiveable acts that the victims will never forget.

19, 2013). The scandal would be labeled as the worst ever in college sports and levied the most significant penalties. The initial investigation concluded with a reprimand from authorities and officials believed the events were over. However, in 2001 an assistant coach with the team witnessed another incident and reported it to Paterno (Crandall, et al, pg. 20, 2013). The officials took action and informed the charitable organization that Sandusky founded. The organization did not enforce consequences, and again Penn State did not inform the trustees. In 2010, subpoenas were issued from the Pennsylvania general attorney, and eventually Sandusky was charged with multiple counts of child abuse (Crandall, et al, pg. 20,

On November 9, Penn State University fired long-time coach Joe Paterno and president Graham Spanier four days after Sandusky was initially arrested. Tim Curley and Gary Schultz, school officials, resigned from their posts. They were accused of perjury and failing to report suspected child abuse. On June 22, 2012, the jury reached a verdict finding Sandusky guilty on 45 of the 48 counts against him. Following the announcement of the verdict, Judge John Cleland immediately revoked Sandusky's bail and ordered him to be taken into custody to await sentencing.…

Yet, these football players are committing crimes of sexual assault to women, and the cases have been covered to protect the “good” name of the school. Taking a look back at Allison Huguet’s's story, we know she was raped by her trusted friend, Beau. She felt protected by him and never thought she would have to fear him. As heartbreaking as it is, what's even worse is how gender was institutionalized within this text. The first prime example of gender institutionalization was when Allison’s lifestyle was changed.…

In many cases I like to maintain an open mind to a situation presented to me. In this case, the conspirators who contributed to Sandusky's abuses should be found guilty. Spanier, shultz and curley should all be found guilty and as mentioned before have no excuse as to why they turned a blind eye to a situation such as this one. If people who are alongside a murderer can also be found guilty of murder, then what difference does it make for these people to be charged with something less when they should receive the same charges such as Sandusky. For many years within the community the public trust was being fed nothing but lies behind their backs.…

In some cases, the victims were made to feel as if it was their own fault. In other cases, there was little to no action taken at all. In one instance at Florida State University, where the victims alleged attacker was on the football team, she was told that “the football team is very powerful” as to tell her that she would never win her case or she had no case. The idea that these universities would not try and cover up these cases or infer that it was the victims fault is very much appalling. It is telling the students on these campuses they value money and the reputation of the school over the life or well-being of the students.…

Great post. After reading your post and supporting articles related to the Rose Bowl incident, two things struck me as concerning. The idea that an annual event took place, where alcohol was served and under-aged student employees were present and partook in these activities. It was interesting to me that an incident report was not filed in LA during the Bowl and was addressed days later once the team returned to campus. Confirmation of inappropriate text message to another student employee was sent by Chadima the night prior to the event, with a similar message as the one shared by Joe Doe.…

The Southern Methodist University football team broke major NCAA rules over the course of the early eighties. This resulted in the crippling of the program for decades. It all started with the wrongful recruitment of players which landed SMU probation. During the years of 1985 and 1986, several players, including Sean Stopperich and David Stanley, came forward and said that they had received money to play football for SMU. Stanley claimed that he received twenty-five thousand dollars to sign with SMU and continued to receive monthly payments while he played for SMU.…

Academic scandals can ruin a university’s reputation and can affect their long term ability to recruit not only basketball players but all students as well. Because the best basketball players must go to college, some universities who are looking to land a big time recruit would do anything to get top rated high schoolers to their university. This often times includes recruiting and academic violations both of which tarnish university’s names. These violations range from monetary bribes to promises of not having to do their homework, anything to get recruits to come play for those coaches making the promises. This can permanently damage some school’s academic reputation.…

Dear. Editor In the recent debate with Hillary and Donald was a constant blabber of the email incident and the sex tape scandal. I enjoy the quote that Donald said, " I never had a failure, Mr. Trump said in one of the interviews, despite his repeated corporate bankruptcies and business setbacks, because I always turned a failure into a success. " This quote intrigues me since Donald Trump do not have the necessary comeback in defending his reputation to become the president of United States.…
