In November of 2011, Penn State and their football program experienced one of the biggest public relations disasters in recent memory. This happened as a result of the once renowned football assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky’s sexual assault of as many as eight underage boys on or near university property. Sandusky was indicted on 52 count counts of child molestation that spanned from 1994 to 2009. The school and football program were also alleged to have covered up the incident. An independent investigation commissioned by Penn State and conducted by former FBI director Louis Freeh stated that university president Graham Spanier, Joe Paterno, and university vice president Gary Schultz had been aware about

Upon committing to the University of North Carolina, the player took advantage of the NCAA self-disclosure rules, and reported that he was improperly recruited by Coach Calipari. As the athletic director, I have decided to utilize the “SLEEPE” Principle in order to review the situation to ensure the best decision is made in regards to the University of Kentucky. This article begins by introducing Brock Turner, who was sentenced to six months of prison for raping an unconscious woman behind a dumpster; he only served three of those six months because he was let off for good behavior. Many people are outraged at his short sentence. He basically only got a slap on the wrist, when this crime is worth 14 years of prison. This short sentence can be blamed on the white privilege that this well-educated, rich, white man, who was a swimmer at Stanford University, had. The article continues to explain how he definitely should have served more time, even though most rapists do not serve anything close to the amount of time they deserve to.…

Once Winston learned of the on-going investigation, he immediately contacted FSU’s athletic department, in which they put him in contact with his lawyer, Tim Jansen. During this time, the school’s Title IX’s coordinator was never informed of the open investigation, which put them in direct violation with Title IX’s policy (Vaughn, 2014). Despite Winston and FSU athletics being in violation with Title IX, there were also hiccups in the investigation from the detectives and TPD that lead to inaccuracies in Kinsman’s story. In the statements of Kinsman original story, she identified one of Winston’s teammates by the name of “Chris”, in which at that time there were only two Chris’s on the team and only one was actually playing. Detective Angulo…

Introduction New Orleans, Louisiana was awarded its first National Football League franchise on November 1, 1966. The franchise became the 16th team in the National Football League and was named the Saints due to the fact that the birthday of the franchise falls on the Roman Catholic Church’s All Saints Day; widely appropriate considering New Orleans is predominately a Catholic city. The city of New Orleans and its beloved franchise has had to deal with some of the most adverse situations imaginable. For example, on August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina devastated the city of New Orleans and caused widespread damage to the Saints home stadium, the Louisiana Superdome. That year the Saints went just 3-13 however, bounced back in 2006 with a trip…

The movie Mean Girls can be evaluated on each of the 4 sociological perspectives. The 2004 American teen classic directed by Mark Waters and written by Tina Fey, Mean Girls, is a great example of how the conflict theory works. Conflict Theory is claimed that individuals and groups within society have different amounts of material and non-material resources and that the more powerful groups use their power to exploit groups with less power. As stated by the conflict theory, the Bourgeoisie has power and takes advantage over the proletariats. This always created conflict between these two classes over money, resources, jobs, titles, etc.. Because of this constant conflict between the two classes, social change was needed.…

In some cases, the victims were made to feel as if it was their own fault. In other cases, there was little to no action taken at all. In one instance at Florida State University, where the victims alleged attacker was on the football team, she was told that “the football team is very powerful” as to tell her that she would never win her case or she had no case. The idea that these universities would not try and cover up these cases or infer that it was the victims fault is very much appalling. It is telling the students on these campuses they value money and the reputation of the school over the life or well-being of the students.…
