Farmers are increasingly relying on groundwater to water their crops when surface water is limited. Groundwater is a strategic backup play; however, it is rapidly vanishing. After the groundwater is all used up what will be the next strategic plan? Several organizations and individuals are concerned that there is not reliable strategy placed for environmental issues that will protect California. Communities are looking for a contingency plan that they can rely on for more than two decades.
The governor has spared the biggest water consumer in the new executive order. Big agriculture companies continue to prosper while small farmers are being hurt from reduced water deliveries. The restrictions are severe on irrigators who depend on canals. In fact, the Central Valley Project is expected to stop distribution this year.
Poor resource management has created a bigger issue in addition to the lack of rain. California has been over-distributing water. More water is being assured than nature can supply. The solutions needed have already far surpassed the precautions they've already taken. Analysts have suggested that water cuts become mandatory not only for civilians but for big businesses as well. Capturing and managing stormwater has become a major concern due to the amount lost to bays oceans and lakes. Old infrastructure accounts for 10 to 15% of the state's water loss as well. Increased water efficiency and water reuse and stormwater capture will become a main focus to helping this incident occurring in California. As noted this is only the beginning of the long-term Solutions that need to be implemented in order to protect their sources of water.
