Case Conceptualization Jeremy’s diagnosis of PTSD, disruptive behavior disorder, NOS and speech delay can be explained by his exposure to domestic violence, physical abuse and neglect. Research indicates that family violence not only affects children’s physical health and safety, but also may affect their psychological adjustment, social relations, and academic achievement (Roberts, Campbell, Ferguson, & Crusto, 2013). Correspondingly, the values, attitudes, and interpersonal skills that are established early in a child’s life play a significant role in the development of violent behavior (Sousa et al, 2001), this may explain his aggressive behavior. I have chosen this theoretical framework as the above mentioned theories have been successful in addressing the concerns with the Grant family. For example, I have utilized cognitive developmental theory as research indicates that deficits in cognitive functioning are associated with childhood trauma exposure (Enlow et al, 2015). Throughout that case it has been important to understand whether or not his behaviors have been developmentally appropriate or if they have been influenced by trauma. By understanding his development in relation to his trauma history has better helped me understand his mental health needs and implement the appropriate services. Additional to cognitive development theory, I have taken a strengths based approach in conjunction with behavior modification with Jeremy by praising his good behaviors and redirecting him when he is heading towards negative attention. This approach has helped me to develop rapport and trust with Jeremy. The literature review has reinforced my approaches as evidence-based practice (EBP) provides validity to the work done with clients (Driskol& Grady, 2015). First being a parent helps me relate to clients, as I recognize the difficulties in raising a child in today’s society. Sharing that I m a parent has helped clients trust that I know what I am talking about when it comes to parenting. Additionally, I am a resident in New Bedford; I am attentive to the issues affecting the city and its residents, also I am familiar with community resources that can best assist the families I work with. On the other hand, my differences drive me to better understand clients who are dissimilar from me. When I’ve have a client who’s culture I am not familiar with, I take the time to educate myself and when I’ve had a client tell me I don’t understand their experience, I ask then to educate me; I don’t try to be the expert. I believe my main strengths as a social worker is my experience and my desire to learn. I have worked in the field for over twenty years in different social work capacities. This experience has provided me with a rich background of professional practice that cannot be found within a classroom. Likewise, I have always had a desire to learn and increase my knowledge through trainings, school or my own research on topics that advance my practice as a social worker, hence why I am in graduate
