For example, I have utilized cognitive developmental theory as research indicates that deficits in cognitive functioning are associated with childhood trauma exposure (Enlow et al, 2015). On the other hand, my differences drive me to better understand clients who are dissimilar from me. When I’ve have a client who’s culture I am not familiar with, I take the time to educate myself and when I’ve had a client tell me I don’t understand their experience, I ask then to educate me; I don’t try to be the expert.
