There was no respect from the people, yet God believed that Jeremiah was enough. Four kings reigned during the time of Jeremiah and none of them listened to Jeremiah. It was not customary for the prophets and the kings to be in such opposition. Jeremiah is stuck in between a God who wants his way done on earth and a disobedient people. Finally in chapter 20, Jeremiah cries out and says “O Lord, thou hast deceived me, and I was deceived” (vs. 7). Jeremiah is the laughingstock of everyone. He feels as if God has led him astray and tricked him into being a prophet “If I say, ‘I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name,’ there is in my heart as it were a burning fire” (vs. 9). He cannot resist preaching the word of God and he thinks that this is the fault of God. Because he stop preaching he continues to be mocked and thought poorly of. Jeremiah, in his last lament, regrets that he was even born. He wishes that the agony his is subjected to would end. Jeremiah is confused with God and the sinful people.
