Television and Videogames: The New Teaching Professors Who would believe an apocalyptic, zombie-killer game or series will make people smarter? Most people believe that mass media destroys your brain cells, but Steven Johnson and Tom Bissell prove this common assumption wrong. In his 2005 article for New York Times Magazine “Watching TV Makes You Smarter”, Johnson convincingly argues how modern shows are making people think more, thus exercising their minds. Supporting this point of view, in his 2010 essay from his recent book “Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter” Tom Bissell adequately asserts that video games are capable of changing player’s lives and challenge their mental abilities.…

The creation of monsters like vampires and zombies presents itself as an allegory the “day to day existence.” Articles like “Why Vampires Never Die” by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan and “My Zombie, Myself: Why Modern Life Feels Rather Undead “ by Chuck Klosterman emphasizes the correlation between folktale and reality. The difference between Folktale and reality is that folktale and reality is that folktale are variations of stories from many cultures, while reality is something that exist and can be proven. This creates room for the idea of death to be a significant aspect to the rise of monstrous beings, as listed prior. The idea of what happens after life, known as death varies amongst cultures and…

The day began much the same as any other – meaning I managed to stumble out of bed and drift through the menial tasks of the morning, but little else. In short, nothing terribly interesting happened beyond the fact I didn’t singe my eyebrows off or burn my home down in an effort to cook breakfast. Actually, considering my zombie state of mind, I completed my chores with a shocking amount of success. An achievement, I must admit, that inspired me to journey beyond the walls of my safe little box yet again. I set out fairly early, this time determined to explore the area closer to my oh-so-humble abode, curious as to what riches I might find.…

“A lot of modern life is exactly like slaughtering zombies.” This statement is true in the eyes of Chuck Klosterman, where he expresses opinions in his article “My Zombie, Myself: Why Modern Life Feels Rather Undead”. In correlation, to the movie Warm Bodies directed by Jonathan Levine one can see that there are many things that we can relate to in modern life that can also be seen in a zombie apocalypse world. For example, in both worlds you can see that once we adapt to our daily lives of work, school, invasion of zombies, and disease, we end up developing a predictable routine in life, no matter the situation. All in all, I believe that there are similarities in a zombie flesh eating world and in the modern world we live in today, we ourselves…

Zombie Mania Zombies have been a large part of our culture for years. Alongside their undead vampiric counterparts, they have held a very dear and somewhat sick place in our hearts. The question is, Why do we love zombies so much, and why does it seem like our love for them is continuing to steadily grow? Our love for zombies seems to stem from two reasons: a fear and fascination with a highly unlikely zombie apocalypse, and the need to distract ourselves from problems within the government while also taking a glimpse of our own nature by watching life be led during dystopian times.…

Could you ever imagine waking up one day and everything was different? Not being able to be sprawled out in your perfectly good bed each morning, but waking up in various locations for protection. This all seemed too much and it was only my first year at Missouri State. A zombie apocalypse was not something I expected from college, especially to be one of the few survivors’ left on campus.…
