School Law Case Study Of Jenny Hayes At Jackson High School

The first case study I examined was about Jenny Hayes at Jackson High School. Jenny was having concerns about intimacy with her boyfriend and sought advice from a teacher she trusted. Ms. Anderson knew that she had a lot of responsibility to help Jenny, especially when Jenny said she had already had sex with her boyfriend and was committed to being intimate again on Homecoming night. While Jenny may be too young to make the decision to have sex or not she is being responsible seeking extra advice about the matter. After reviewing School Law: What Every Educator Should Know I did not find anything condemning Ms. Anderson’s actions and discussions that she had with Jenny. Yes, Ms. Anderson’s actions of providing additional information (book, phone number) and sending her in the direction of a health clinic went against the religious views of the Hayes family and the community. However, Ms. Anderson had good reason for it. Jenny had already expressed that she had done it once and was planning on doing it again. She ignored the advice of the counselor who Ms. Anderson appointed her to. Ms. Anderson was not promoting that Jenny go have sexual relations with her boyfriend, but that she needs to be informed about all the possible risks that are involved (pregnancy, STDs, emotional stress, ect.). In the case study she began to defend her decisions to Mr. Beamish, but I also think she needs to defend her position to the school board (it seems this case could be taken there). Ms. Anderson had good intentions for her actions and she wants her students to be educated and ready to enter the adult world. Students cannot be expected to have healthy sexual relationship when they graduate high school without the proper education.
