This statement follows the story of Tortilla Sun by Jennifer Cervantes, a story that follows the relationship of a girl named Izzy and her mother. Izzy and her mother have a close relationship but often find a few things they do not agree over. In this excerpt, Izzy’s mother is going to Costa Rica to finish her research, hoping to get a better life for her and her daughter. Izzy on the other hand, hates the idea of being alone, and most of all being with her grandmother who she hasn’t seen since she was six. “New Mexico is worlds away from California, And what am I going to do for two whole months with someone I haven’t seen since I was six! …” Izzy starts to raise her tone, indicating how she is hurt by her mother’s reaction. This reaction foreshadows tension, that from one argument may cause the breakdown of the characters. “ It’s strange and beautiful at the same time and a perfect place to explore. You just might be surprised what you find there.” He paused for a moment then continued “Would you please talk to me?” This quote represents a chain reaction in the story and shows how although it may revolve more around one character’s sadness, other characters are affected too. By getting a college education, her mother is attempting to put her life together and getting happiness for them two. Both these perspectives portray depict a breaking in the relationship of the two by showing how a mother leaving her daughter for the summer, leads to something as big as a
