Jennifer Brown's The Hate List

Jennifer Brown’s The Hate List is one of the most realistic young-adult fictions. It channels into what is going on in the real world. The main plot of the story itself is about one of the most prevalent types of crime in the United States; school shootings. In this book, Brown tries to raise awareness of this ongoing mass murder all around the world through the main theme of the novel which is hatred as the foundation of violence. Although The Hate List is not directly based on a true story, the plot seems extremely close to The Columbine Massacre, one of the most exasperating shootings of all time. Just like the characters in this novel, the convicted teenagers Eric David Harris and Dylan Bennett Klebold were socially outcast …show more content…
Although both Eric and Dylan were known as focused and gifted students by their teachers just like Nick and Valerie in the novel, they were bullied for almost all high school. “The answer was so obvious-Nick hated those kids. And they hated him back. That’s why. Hate. Punches in the chest. Nicknames. Laughs. Snide comments. Being shoved into the lockers…They hated him and he hated them and somehow it ended up this way”. This quote explains how the theme of hatred is common among students who commit violent crimes as a revenge for being bullied. Since that incident, the impact of bullying on school violence has been a serious issue and been under attention to date. This massacre has changed the way people look at verbal and physical harassment amongst students. Before the tragedy happened, teachers usually had looked the other way instead of dealing with bullying, but a great deal of public awareness has been raised ever since. Consequently, school harassment is now being considered as a serious offence. During the story, the only difference between …show more content…
12-year old Jose Reyes was responsible for killing his teacher in the school yard the morning of October 31st, 2013. Although the shooting involved only two people including Jose himself, it is the latest case of murder as a cause of school bullying, mostly by prominent students. “The Jocks who punched Nick in the chest in the hallways when nobody was looking, those “perfect kids” who nobody would believe were just as bad as the “bad kids”. We had talked about how the world would be a better place with lists like ours around-people being accountable for their actions.” This quote from the novel is truly identical to Jose’s sayings in the two pages of suicide notes which police found while investigating the case .The notes helped the police report depression and bullying as the main reasons for Jose’s actions. Sentences such as "Well that all ends. Today I will get revenge on the students and teachers for ruining my life," , "to shoot you and see how you like it when someone (sic) making fun of you." were found among the notes that he left behind .What makes this incident the most outrageous out of all the stories that connect to The Hate List, is that the person committed this crime was only 12. He was shockingly inspired by the Columbine massacre. He saved pictures of the two teens that made the shooting and even played video

During the 1900s, many African American people emerged in the public eye such as Martin Luther King, Jr and Malcolm X, who continued to fight for the equality of black people. In 2008, when Senator Barack Obama was the first black male to be elected to be the president of the United States, some people credit this time in history as the day racism died. They believe if Americans can elect a black person to run our country, racism against black people must be something of the past (Brunners, 2015). Almost immediately after becoming the president-elect, he started receiving threats and hate mail, purely because of the color of his skin (Neiwert, 2016).…
