Setup and Catalyst Jennette McCurdy is a former child star known primarily for her role as Sam Puckett in Nickelodeon’s iCarly. Her gritty, spunky portrayal of Sam endeared her to audiences. iCarly ran from 2007-2012. Subsequently, the spin-off, Sam & Cat, starred Jennette McCurdy with Ariana Grande as a co-star, and it ran from 2013-2014. She was born on June 26, 1992 in Long Beach, California and booked her first role at just eight years old. Behind the scenes, McCurdy’s home life was fraught with problems. Like many parents of child stars, she lived vicariously through Jennette. Jennette was never passionate about acting. However, Jennette was eager to please her mother, since she had been conditioned to understand that insubordination would lead to Debra throwing a tantrum, guilt-tripping Jennette, and other forms of abuse. A turning point in Jennette’s life came when her mother finally succumbed to cancer in September 2013 after struggling for almost 20 years. The passing of her mother forced her to confront her emotions and reevaluate her priorities. Due to their codependent relationship, Jennette has yet to discover her authentic self.
