254). However, Orange is the New Black seems to show correctional officers to be enforcing regulations while providing little to no help for their prisoners. An example of this is found in season four, episode ten, where correctional officer Piscatella who deprives Red, an inmate, of sleep and forcing her to work endlessly. Moreover, Piscatella tells all the prisoners in the cafeteria, “you’re all criminals, and you deserve nothing” as he shoves Red to the ground (Kohan, 2016). Red has done nothing to resist orders nor has she misbehaved in any way but was treated with brute force by Piscatella. Another instance in abuse of authority is found in season three episode ten, where the warden, Joe Caputo, walks into the penitentiary alarmed by the inmate’s freedom to express religion and immediately suspends it indefinitely (Kohan, 2015). Not only are the correctional officers mistreating inmates, but also the warden, for taking away one of their fundamental rights. On the other end of the spectrum, we see officers who focus …show more content…
Despite the many cases and conflicts with correctional officers already, there is a life described as the pains of imprisonment. That is, “the deprivations experienced by inmates confined in correctional institutions, including the loss of autonomy, privacy, security, privacy, security, and freedom of movement and association” (Griffiths, 2015, p. 257). On another note, inmates deprived of social contact resort to masturbation and consensual sex with other inmates to cope. Often times, a lifestyle of lesbian activity, in this case, tie into their identity and inmates will continue to develop lesbian relationships when they are released back into the community (Griffiths, 2015, p. 258). A key theme in the show is the sexual activities between inmates such as Piper and Alex. Originally, before her incarceration, Piper was engaged to her fiancé Larry but she loses her feelings as she gets closer to Alex (Kohan, 2015). Knowing this, we can assume that after her time, Piper will be likely spending her time looking for a female partner rather than staying with Larry. Another aspect of life in prison is that inmates tend to divide themselves into niches based on ethnicity or culture (Griffiths, 2015, p. 259). Orange is the New Black divides these women up based on their races; we have the whites, the blacks, and the

Although the riot’s end was devastating and should have initiated insurmountable progress within prisons, the prison reforms that followed were little to none. Alice Speri (2016, par. 1 and 9) writes in her article that Attica “remains a prison rife with abuse rather than a monument to a massacre,” and prisoners today are still struggling in the fight against “prison labor and inhumane prison condition.” These demands for reform are nearly identical to those of the Attica prison riot 45 years ago. Today there are still issues regarding the need for factual information about problems in prisons and increased media coverage of prison conditions, and Speri (2016, par. 16) claims prisons today are “much worse” than at the time of the riot at Attica.…

The funny this, when you are involved with a person and decide to build a life together, their core values and morals are infiltrated with different core values and morals of their spouse. Together, they mix morals learned from their predecessors and build a family together based on those values. Inadvertently, they’ve crossed boundaries and believe that they will live happily ever after. Of course in any family, there are joyous times and then there are the times of turmoil.…

Orange is the New Black (OITNB) is a Netflix original web series created by Jenji Kohan and adapted from the memoir of Piper Kerman, Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison (2010), which explores life inside a women’s prison system. The series includes a diverse cast of historically excluded Black, Latina, and transgender actresses. How do they create seemingly groundbreaking media based on the controversial world of prison systems in a time when inequality is perpetuated by institutionalized racism: a time when the likelihood of black women going to prison is 1 in 18, while for the white women it is 1 in 111 (The Sentencing Project). Race is a determining factor in how institutionalized systems in our society affect individuals.…

When talking about Piper being told to plead guilty, her attorney could have been overworked, leading her to accept a bad deal. This is common with public defenders in real life, but it isn’t stated what type of attorney Piper had, making this claim more dubious. Piper does correctly make the distinction between prison and jail, as jail is used as short-term housing for convicts awaiting trial and prison is where the people found guilty are forced to serve out their sentence. In addition, it seems common for inmates to do work around the prison, but the extent of the work they do varies between prisons, so it is not impossible that the inmates could have jobs such as driving the van to bus around new inmates. Also, the inmates creating a sort of family bond between each other is actually rather common in real life; the reason for this is still up for debate, but it has been shown to exist (Bedard 2009).…

These prisons can provide women what the outside world, ran by dominant white society, denies them of or makes extremely difficult to attain. This includes employment opportunities, food security, and shelter, all obtainable “without a welfare or Medicaid card” (268). Because many incarcerated women are low income, single mothers, prison allows them to escape these heavily pressured and scrutinized roles. Prisons can provide low paying jobs that allows women to support solely themselves, rather than for others, like their children, partner, or other family members as they normally would outside of prison (Women Behind Bars). However, outside these walls, women will also face gendered and racialized low pay wages, while most jobs also refuse to hire convicted felons.…

“The U.S. houses 5% of the worlds population, while housing 25% of the worlds population” (Alexander, 2011). Statistically, men of color are incarcerated at a much higher rate than their white counterparts. Though prison population has been increasing at exponential rates, there is an invisibility aspect of prisons. When people are incarcerated, they are literally out of sight, which leads to the “out of sight, out of mind” concept, though this happens on a much larger community scale. Though the population may be invisible in some communities, there is plenty of literature and media portrayal of life in prison, which can be used to shape society’s understanding of these institutions.…
