I sit in the church, surrounded by family and friends of the closest. My mother holds my hand as she weeps into the shoulder of my dad. The pastor stands on the stage reading scripture that is supposed to bring comfort to the aching hearts sitting all around. A familiar face fills the pictures that illuminate the room, this is my aunt Jenifer. Tears roll down my cheeks and my heart is aching. I reached for my last tissue and wiped my endless tears as I sat among my friends in the center of the crowded church, staring through blurry eyes at the slideshow of cherished memories flashing across the screen. Tears of confusion and sorrow dripped down my cheeks. I tried so hard to focus on the pastors heartfelt words of encouragement and the memorable stories that were shared by loved ones, but my ears could not listen, and my heart could not stand the desolate pain. I glanced up for a moment only to see a picture of us; she was bear hugging me, wrapping her small legs around my waist, and she looked so happy, genuinely happy. Her smile was beaming from ear to ear, for her passion and love for life was contagious.…

My grandma’s house was always a place filled of mirth, jollity, and most importantly unconditional love. I remember racing up those steep, wooden stairs to the plain bungalow that awaited up top, thrilled to greet the multitude of family inside who were just as enthusiastic to do the same. My grandma, or what we preferred to call her, Nannie, always stitched our family closer and closer together as the years went by. Many would think that having twelve children who then grew up to have youngsters of their own would cause such a sizable family to end up dispersing and going off to do their own things, but Nannie would never let that be. According to my many aunts and uncles, Nannie’s one wish was, “for this family to be united as one.”…
