To Kill a Mockingbird has many examples of personal courage in the face of injustice, and many people who show it. Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird affected me in many ways and helped me understand what racism was like back then and how life was like in a town where everyone knows everyone. I, in my opinion, think that Jem showed the most courage out of all the people in the book. Even though he might seem wimpy, he does his best to protect others and stand up for what’s right. Jem in the beginning of the book is pretty young and doesn’t show much courage, but when he gets older he shows a lot of courage.…

Jem and Scout grew quite a lot throughout this novel, but the one who I think grew the most would have to be Jem. Jem has went through a lot in this book, he was attacked by a stranger (So was Scout), learned many things regarding courage, bravery, ect. Because of Jem being the older sibling, his job is to protect and care for the younger ones. He does this in many situations which is why I also think Jem is the better character. Even if he isn’t the main character or the narrator.…

Schyler suzuki Pd:2 Jem And Scout Coming Of Age Although Harper Lees To Kill a Mockingbird presents a number of themes, such as racism and social class in the American south, it is the coming of age of Jem and Scout that provides perhaps the most powerful theme in the entire novel. The theme that arises from this coming of age of Jem and Scout relates to the essential nature of human beings more specifically, the novel explores in a very dramatic way whether people are essentially good and just or whether people are instead fundamentally evil and disinterested in objective notions of justice. As children, under the guidance of their principled and very moral father, both Jem and Scout are compelled to endure events that test their beliefs, their faith in their fathers teachings, and their very perception and understanding of human behavior.…

The best gauge of Jem’s maturity comes from the development of his courage and bravery. Jem represents the idea of bravery in the novel, and the way that his definition changes over the course of the story is important. The shift that occurs probably has as much to do with age as experience, although the experiences provide a better framework for the reader. When the story begins, Jem's idea of bravery is simply touching the side of the Radley house and then only…
