InTo Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee Atticus creates many opportunities for jem to read to Mrs. Dubose. This is a good thing because Jem deserves this punishment for what he has done.
First Jem deserves this because he lost his temper and destroyed Mrs. Dubose’s flowers when he shouldn't have . Jem got so much money for his 12th birthday, Scout and Jem went into town to buy a train set and a baton. On their way there causing Mrs. Dubose to make some harmful comments about their family when Jem and Scout came back from town Jem was still mad when they “had just come on her gate when Jem snatched my baton and ran flailing wildly up the steps into Mrs. Dubose’s front yard, forgetting everything Atticus has said, forgetting that she packed

Dubose missed, her girl Jesse wouldn’t. He did not calm down until he had cut the tops off every camellia bush Mrs. Dubose owned”(102-103). Because of Mrs. Dubose commenting on the Finch’s family Jem lost his temper and started to destroy her flowers. Second Jem deserves this because jem is scared of her but doesn't know her. When Atticus found out he made Jem go and apologize and come up with something to make up for Jem's wrong decisions. Jem came back home with the compromise to read to Mrs. Dubose for an hour after school for a month. Jem pleaded to Atticus saying “It’s all right on the sidewalk but inside it's-it's all dark and creepy. There's shadows and things on the ceiling (105).Because Jem was so rude to Mrs. Dubose he needs to make it up to her. He gets home from apologizing and he complains and tried to get out of it simply because he is scared of her. The last reason Jem deserves this because she’s dying from an addiction and needed something to do to get her mind of things. Jem and Scout never saw Mrs. Dubose on the porch Jem told Atticus “she’s dead son said Atticus she died a few minutes ago”(110). The whole reason Mrs. Dubose got Jem to read to her because she is
