Jem Bravery In To Kill A Mockingbird

Jem and Scout grew quite a lot throughout this novel, but the one who I think grew the most would have to be Jem. Jem has went through a lot in this book, he was attacked by a stranger (So was Scout), learned many things regarding courage, bravery, ect. Because of Jem being the older sibling, his job is to protect and care for the younger ones. He does this in many situations which is why I also think Jem is the better character. Even if he isn’t the main character or the narrator.

Many parts of the book point out Jems bravery and courage. One of which is when he ran back to the Radley's house for his pants, which were to his surprise, folded neatly over the fence. Jem has multiple moments of bravery throughout the book. Another good time of bravery for Jem is when he was with Scout walking through the woods and they were attacked. Jem didn’t exactly fight off Bob Ewell, but he did resist long enough until Boo Radley came and saved him. Jem kept his composure and didn’t freak out.

However, this clearly changes in the novel. Jem ages from 10 to 13 throughout the course of the novel which gives him time to experience life and to understand more things an everyday person does. When Atticus shot the “mad dog” Jem learned that even if you don’t exactly know what you're doing, you should always take a shot at whatever it is you're doing and make the best out of it. Atticus was brave to try and shoot the dog even after he states he hasn’t shot a gun in years as this quote from Chapter Ten says, "For God's sake, Mr. Finch, look where he is! Miss and you'll go straight into the Radley house! I can't shoot that well and you know it!" "I haven't shot a gun in thirty

Aspects of Courage “Courage is when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what” (Lee 149) this statement explains how courage is defined in Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird. An example of this can be seen when Atticus Finch defends Tom Robinson. Another example is Miss Maudie losing her home and how she keeps her views on issues. Lastly, Boo Radley and Mrs. Dubose show courage.…

Jem knew that Atticus was in trouble, or going to be, so he was willing to go to town by himself to see where Atticus was. He also was with Scout and Dill, and since he was the oldest, he was in charge of his and their safety, and by not leaving when Atticus told him to, this put them all in danger. This would take courage because there were many older men standing around him that Jem did not know that also looked like they wanted to hurt him. Even though he was in a dangerous situation, when Atticus says, “‘Go home, Jem,’ . . . ‘Take Scout and Dill home.’. . .…

This quote is right after they found Dill hiding under a bed and Jem and Scout were reacting to it. Rather than going along with some scheme like earlier in the story, Jem tells Dill that his mother would be worried and tells Atticus. This shows courage, because instead of following his friends, he follows his own judgement and does the right thing. This also shows that Jem is indeed maturing and doing what he thinks is the most moral thing. I predict that Jem will continue growing up and will do the right thing throughout the rest of the story, and I believe this because Jem as slowly been developing already.…

Innocence is most commonly defined as ‘freedom from sin, moral wrong, or guilt through lack of knowledge of evil’. When comparing this definition to the characters of Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, it becomes clear that the loss of innocence is a central theme and is pivotal to character development. Some of the key characters who have lost their innocence are Jem Finch and his sister Scout , Arthur (Boo) Radley and Mayella Ewell. This collection of characters is unique, as they all of them are extremely different from one another. Due to the fact that the novel was written in the first person view of a child, the audience is given a deeper connection with the loss of innocence, whilst becoming witness to how the four characters…
