Jehovah Witness

I recently attended my aunt’s church services, she’s a dedicated Jehovah Witness. It had been a while since I’ve talked about Jehovah Witness, ever since my dad passed away it’s a religion that has been in my review mirror. My dad was not a true Jehovah Witness, but he did follow the religion just to support his parents and siblings. As a writing assignment for my Religious Quest class I attended a Jehovah Witness service, and I’d like to share my experience.

I choose to attend a service different than mine. Ever since my dad past away back in 1999, I’ve been distance from his side of the family, and I thought this assignment would be a great opportunity to see them. My dad’s side of the family have been Jehovah witnesses,

There were about 30 people in the pews, and they all seemed to know one another. In my church we have such a large congregation it’s not possible to personally know everyone. As I enter the service I noticed that many of the people were well dressed, even the kids wore slacks and a tie. In my church everyone is more relaxed and dress business causal. The church was nice, but it felt like I was entering a business meeting for work with so many well-dressed people. The service started with songs and prayer, similar to how my Catholic mass begins. Then someone got up and read a passage and began his reflection. The passage was about how God wants us to be, and any chance the person had, he spoke badly about other religions. I felt some of the remarks were amid at my Catholic Church. As the person continued on he gradually raised if voice pretty loud, and some of the people were dropping to their knees and parsing him, this was kind of awkward. During our mass we sometimes get a little excited, but not to the point as I experienced with my aunt church, does this mean were not doing it right at our church? I don’t think so, I do feel the Holy Spirit at our church, but I just don’t react like them. Then as expected, it come out of the persons mouth, “the world is a terrible place and we need to separate from the bad religions that are out there, and we must not celebrate holidays

Spanish Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church 1. What happened during the services? I arrived at the church a few minutes prior to the service and I was greatly surprised by how well attended the service was. There were dozens of families in a spectrum of Sunday best and work-stained denim jeans and nearly every person wore a yellow and white vest with a red cross embroidered on the lapel. At the entrance there was a small dipping well and although there was no water in it at the moment, (most likely due to the sizeable crowd) people still placed their fingers in the dry well and crossed themselves before entering the chapel and before sitting, they would cross themselves again.…

A couple weeks ago, Holy Ghost had its annual service trip to the Dominican Republic. I had heard about the trip from Dr. O’Connor when I did the summer enrichment program in 6th grade. I looked forward to going on the trip when I got to Ghost, and I got the chance this summer. At first I was really nervous, but by the second day there I realized how special the trip truly is. I got to give my Spanish a jog, I got to meet a ton of new people, and I had my eyes opened to a new way of living.…

My cohort and I left for New Orleans a couple of days early due to a booking error, however we had planned on going on an excursion anyway so it worked out just fine. It was amazing to hear the history behind some of the plantations and to walk the same halls that these people walked in 170 plus years ago. The view from Oak Alley was breath taking a symbol that still stands as a testament to the South’s golden age. The trees were planted a 100 years before the land was purchased and a home was even built. The house is built completely around the twenty-six with twenty-six pillars that surround the house, twenty-six windows that open so that fresh air can blow through the hot humid house.…

The church itself was very large, which allowed several more people. On my first day in Awana, the program for kids in Christ, I was sitting awkwardly, since I didn’t know anyone. Several people were busy chatting the day away, while I was sitting alone. When they called us in, I was put with other 7th and 8th graders and sat at the unofficial “girl table.” As soon I settled in, I stared as everyone was chatting with each other-- all veterans in the church.…

It was a whole new church that my family was just attending while we were passing through the area, in all honesty I probably only attended five churches in my life prior, due to the fact that my family travelled so vigorously. This being said I wasn’t very holy I just kinda went because due to my age I ended up playing games most the time, never really having to be preached too. This church was contrastive than the prior experiences I was exposed to because I had to go to the main service area with my mother and father. To be blunt this was my first formal introduction to “my lord.” It began with singing, which I even had to endure at the children's ministry, but then came the hour and a half of my first meeting with who this man people always talked about really was.…

I have now learned that the majority of a Mormon service is the Bearing of Testimonies. This is when the service is handed over to the members to give testimonies in front of the entire congregation. Nothing is planned, and member can go in front of the congregation at random. During these testimonies, these people shared stories and personal experiences regarding The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. People also shared why they believed in the prophets Joseph Smith, Nephi, and President Thomas Spencer Monson.…
