Service Learning Project: Jehovah Witness Meeting
My cousin, Nancy Ramirez Pena is a Jehovah Witness, so I chose to attend one of her meetings. One thing I will say is that everyone was welcoming and made me feel like home. The meeting I attended was in Spanish. They also have 2 other meetings that are English. There were about 100 people in attendance at the congregation. Pretty large crowd. The first thing that stood out to me was that they don’t have saints all over like we do. This makes sense because they don’t believe in saints. The second thing that stood out to me is what is called mass to me is called a meeting to them. The meeting lasted about 2 hours long. Mass for Catholics is about 1 hour long. They also don’t take the bread and

Everyone joined together and sang while standing. Right after, they had bible study which reminded me of how our father in a Catholic church recites it. Everyone just watched and listened as their pastor read through it for about 30 minutes. Shortly after they had a discussion from the watch tower book that every Jehovah witness practices and discusses across the world. I found the discussion interesting because they read through it and asked questions. The members engaged by raising their hands and sharing their thoughts and beliefs. This also included children. The message they shared was so close to home. They talked about family and how we should love one another. The interaction amongst everyone made it very interesting and engaging for me. It was nice to see something different. I noticed that they do not kneel like we do throughout the ceremony and it is not just the father who speaks throughout the entire ceremony. Engaging the members really made me feel a part of something special. They also relate themselves to be Christians. This was new to me because I never knew they considered themselves Christians. What I also noticed is that they call each other Hermano/Hermana (brother/sister). They see each other as one big family. I noticed the connection amongst each other and how they greeted one another with so much

The site that I visited was Mercy Hill Church in Greensboro, NC. I went to a sermon, with some friends, that took place on a Sunday night. When we arrived at the church, we stayed together and observed the site. The members of this church all seemed to be within their twenties and thirties; there were a few younger children and a few older women and men, but not many. Most of these people seemed to be from Christian ethnic backgrounds or just unaffiliated with any ethnicity.…

Spanish Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church 1. What happened during the services? I arrived at the church a few minutes prior to the service and I was greatly surprised by how well attended the service was. There were dozens of families in a spectrum of Sunday best and work-stained denim jeans and nearly every person wore a yellow and white vest with a red cross embroidered on the lapel. At the entrance there was a small dipping well and although there was no water in it at the moment, (most likely due to the sizeable crowd) people still placed their fingers in the dry well and crossed themselves before entering the chapel and before sitting, they would cross themselves again.…

As a result, I did not know what to expect as I watched the meeting. I was shocked to find out that prior to the actual meeting they hold academic highlights and recognitions. I think it is sad that there are not many people there but at least students are being recognized from their accomplishments. I think this is great and shows what is being done in the school system especially with the Proud Tour. I do think that the official meeting was rather confusing.…

(Angel)ine The day Angeline came into my life I didn’t expect for her to change it. One day in mid-December my mom, my brother, Angeline and I were sitting in Angeline’s living room. We were there for somewhat of a prayer visit, to talk with and help each other through God with problems we may need a third-party perspective on. I was silent most of the time because I wasn’t used to or particularly interested in being there.…

I recall a memory of me having a brief discussion with a Jehovah’s Witness about the Lord’s church. When I mentioned the church of Christ, he asked me, “which church is that? I have never heard of it.” This man, like a lot of people both inside and outside of the church, did not have any idea about what it is. So, we would like to talk about some important aspects of the church that help us understand the body to which we belong.…

I think this says a lot about the ministry this groups does and how much time and commitment the staff has for it. They work so much with people and giving them comfort they didn’t have time to waste on trivial things. As a group we were able to bless them by painting a racket ball court and doing outside yard work like trimming bushes and pulling weeds. During this morning we were there I was able to work outside.…

As an ignorant young adult, I wasn’t very outgoing; I was always the shy student, the one who always got bullied and I wouldn’t really talk to anyone. When I turned fourteen, my parents informed me I was to attend confirmation classes. I wasn’t exactly enthused at the new that I would attend it for two years. To add to these, wonderful news; my older brother was going with me too. Goody.…

The priests and nuns take turns voicing their stories about the people they met along their life journey and the things they have seen. My friends consist of the people I met on this pilgrimage even though they are from Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. We all come together to reach a goal. Usually, the goal is to get closer to our faith but it may differ. The sound of everyone clapping, playing guitars, singing and laughing fills the air even after countless hours of walking in either the blistering, hot sun or the cold rain.…

There were many different times throughout the service in which someone, the priest or the person who read scripture, said something and the congregation responded. Similarly, there was more than one prayer that was said out loud from memory. Another ritual in the Catholic church that does not carry over into many Protestant churches is kneeling in the pews during certain times of prayer. Likewise, the Eucharist, or communion, in Catholic Mass was another ritual I was unfamiliar with. Though I have participated in communions in Protestant churches for much of my life, I had never seen it happen the way it did in Mass.…
